Between the Turbo-Lites and GT's, the GT's get a Getrac 5-Speed Manual. Another option that GT's have is the auto-stick, lets you cycle through the gears 1-4. The Turbo-Lites, your stuck with D, and gears 3 and 1.
If you get a GT 5-Speed manual, you probably wouldn't really need a Stage 1. You don't get the power-train hp loss penalty compare to automatics/autosticks. On a perfomance point of view (for 5-Speed Manual), without a Stage 1, you can't hold boosts on WOT shifts and 1st gear has a capped setting for boost (Chrysler did this for torque management). Therefore, 5-Speed manuals will only be marginally better in 1/4 mile times than stock auto GT's. In comparison of a turbo-lite stage 1 auto vs GT auto (with no stage 1). They probably would be very close on the 1/4 mile times. The reason being is: GT Autos set on "D" will shift earlier from 3rd gear to 4th gear causing a roughly an 0.3 penalty in 1/4 mile times. GT Autos that are set on Auto-stick mode and allowed to shift on it own will net you better times. A Turbo-Lite with stage 1 has really only the option to stay on "D", which in turn will be a rough equivalent of a GT Auto set on "D". HOWEVER, this is all just speculation. I do not know if stage 1 eliminates the early shift from 3rd to 4th gear for GT autos and Turbo-lites with Stage 1 set on "D". Personally, I would take a manual to get some sports feel, but the Auto's aren't too far behind either. At least both types qualify well as a family car [ ]. |

Justin, if you really aren't planning on doing any modding then the GT is most likely the way to go, and for all the suspension/brake/ wheel reasons mentioned. This coming from a Turbo Lite (+Stage1) owner who's done a fair amount of modding and is thrilled with his car! A Stage1 equipped Turbo Lite ends up with the same performance as a GT with Stage1.

Hello, I'm a non GT owner, but GT is the way to go! Why not get all that they offer for a few more $$$! I have an 01, and if I didnt have so much invested in it, I would get the GT no questions. Like all the others said above, just do it. [?]

Just my two cents... I have tested the theory and if you have a Turbo lite as I do with a regular automatic tranny, you can put it 1st and floor it. Chrysler has a built in safety that shifts automatically from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd at just under 6000 rpm, with out ever having to move the stick. Neat trick for the strip!! Sorry, I know it's a little off topic, but a cool thing to know when you have the granny tranny!!
