Most of the people either customer or friends when they ask this and are having some drivability issues with an engine with more than 50K miles I recommend that they use 89+ *RON/(R+M)/2 (best is *93 when available) and to use Chevron fuels. Never let the fuel tank get below 1/4 tank and try to fill not top off when filling the fuel tank. Try not to use any fuel additives unless they are of the highest quality from recognized companies that actually produce their own products and not simply allowing a second source company bottle for resale using their name products.

I don't top off my tank, but what is your reason for suggesting not to? Sounds like an intriguing answer is in store . . .

In Florida (and most of the southern states) if you top it off, the heat will expand the fuel to overflowing. Other reasons.....

Ok haha here is one for ya!

While it is a common sence dating to the early 60's when fuel tank were behind the licence plate and by the bumper and topping off often meant that you pored fuel on the road and all over the rear of your car.
In the 80's the US had the most emission control devices of any other years and if you topped off it was easy to damage costly to replace emission parts.

In the ever concerning environmental concern we all live in when raw fuel is allowed to spill out because of topping off it has an effect on everything that is living in a negative way. At least when contained in a controlled fuel tank system the burned fuel emission is somewhat managed.

Let the pump pressure/auto stop the fuel. It is easy to over fill fuel systems manually by topping off. Sometimes this can get into other emission related components that are not designed for high raw fuel introductions. The older in years a vehicle is the more you want to make sure that fuel is not allowed to spill on things like plastic, rubber, painted etc., surfaces.
