...I ran mine all the way too the cut-off limiter at 130 mph, and the hood didn't fly off! Just cut a piece of the strip about 6 inches long and put it in the center of the original location and it will dampen the hood vibration.
For those that really worry it's the antenna you better be concerned about...it will lay back nearly horizontal at speed and hit the top of the Cruiser. Just cut it off at about 18" and polish it if it is of the silver type and put the cap back on it, it will match the chrome wheels and will look a lot better than aftermarket. The engine temperature will not lower because the thermostat won't allow it to cool below a set temp so you will not notice a lower engine temp...it's the "heat sink" on the underhood components that we are trying to lower...such as the intake air tube and manifold to get the maximum charge from the turbo. Lower temps under the hood will also increase most component parts and stop the turbo heat from cooking the rest of the engine. About the DC issue with muffling the sound of the turbo...take the air tube off at the turbo and leave it attached everywhere else and start the engine and hit the throttle a few times, just running it a minute won't hurt the engine not breathing through the filter. I have never heard a turbo make such a whine, it is so high it hurts your ears..nearly like a jet engine sound. I am wondering if this is why the after market has not jumped on us a new cold air intake..I really don't think most will want to hear that sound all the time!!! |

how many people have actually removed the lower silencer? It;s set up to where it poulls air from the fender well, if you remove that piece won;t it draw air from the hot engine bay?

Check out Cal Cruzer-03/20/2003 under "Modding the GT". This should help get hot air out. Just increase the wrap-around spoiler a couple of inches if you can handle the decreased ground clearance.

I removed both silencers in the air box but didnt tell the wife. She said it sounded different only when she accelerated and she liked the little extra noise so all is well!

After reading all the happy customers after the removal of the air box silencers made me think, what was DC thinking when they decided to install that horrible thing in there!!!
Now the question is: If a Service Rep sees the car without the air box silencer. Would the warranty be voided in the engine? I know there are some ex-service managers in this forum. Whats the scoop? There is nothing functional in this item except restrict the amount of air going to the engine and to "silence" the turbo whine... Ian |
