PTGT_Boy, I think your biggest issue with not being able to lower your times is a combination of your launch technique and wheel hop. Until you can get that figured out (motor mounts, drag radials, RPM sweetspot, clutch slip, whatever) I don't think Stage 1 is going to help you a heck of a lot. Yes, you may well run higher trap speeds due to the increased HP, but if you can't put down the HP and torque you have now, how do you plan on putting down the extra oomph S1 will give you?

And we have another night of lousy traction like we had that one night, you and I can have a contest to see who can smoke thier tires the farthest down the track!

I know how to launch off the line at 2.4s 60's consitently (not much of an effort really). I long suspected the stock mount isn't doing me any favors on the launchs with wheel hop, I ordered AGP solid mounts in hopes of helping control the wheelhoppin. I'll know for sure if it's my driving that sucks or the mounts really do suck [].

I ordered Stage 1, since Stage 2 is the back burner again.

I don't believe for a second that your driving sucks, and I hope you never thought that I've meant that on this or any other forum. Maybe your parenthetic commment above (not much of an effort really) is telling: are you perhaps not putting in enough effort? Yes, you're very consistant, but could that mean you're also stuck in a rut? Like I'm very consistant with my reaction times - they all suck, but they are VERY consistant! That's the rut I'm stuck in[xx(]

What I really meant was, I know how to do 2.4s, 2.5s, and 2.6s launches (just by varying the RPMS). When I tried going higher than 2000 RPMS, it just becomes difficult to control the wheel hop. I'm not sure if I'm at my skill limit in launching better OR its the physics of a FWD on stock mounts that is limiting me .

I'll find out on November 13th (or the 12th, I might sign up for the private runs held on that date. You can check out SRT-4 forums under California for California Speedway November 12th).

Thanks Mike, I'm going to try. [^]
PTGT_Boy, do other FWD's have wheel hop, and is it just with 5 speeds?

John

John, I've heard a lot of talk about wheel hop but I've never experienced it with my automatic. Even the night we had really lousy traction at the drag strip and I smoked the tires all the way through first gear I had no hop. I know that other automatic owners have experienced it though.

All unmodified production FWD cars will have wheel-hop, especially manual FWD cars. Civic SI's, Toyota Celica GT-S, Nissan Sentra Spec V's, SRT-4's, just to name a few have wheel hop on launches with their stock mounts (Manual Transmissions).

For the GT automatics, at least from I've seen, they just move off the line at 2.2 secs fairly easy. I'm not a transmission or physics expert, but I suspect it has to be the gearing ratios and torque converter that gives the auto GT an advantage off the line. However, they still can get wheelhop at higher RPM launches.

For GT 5-speed manuals, its been my experience that a launch from idle will net you 2.6 sec 60's. 1200 - 1500 range will net you about 2.5 sec 60's and 1800 - 2000 should get you to around 2.4 sec 60's. Anything, higher just results in alot of wheel hoppin and your pretty much around 2.2 - 2.4 sec 60's (its quite random).

^ Wheel hop isnt a transmission issue, but a FWD issue. As you start to move, the weight gets transferred to the rear of the car and allows the drive wheels (front in this case) to espell its energy elsewhere but down on the ground. Thats why RWD cars dont have this problem...their downforce is immense do to the weight transfer.
