Castrol syntec is not a true synthetic oil. It is a hydrocracked oil called a group III oil. It is better than regular dino oil but falls short of the group IV oils that are true synthetics like Amsoil and Mobil 1. Castrol syntec is overpriced for what you get.
Chevron Supreme oil is group III and costs no more than Penzoil conventional oil.
Group IV oils can take higher temps than group III and lower oils. This is why so many turbo owners use it. Turbo bearings can cook the oil evaporating it leaving solids behind on the bearing. This is called coking and shortens the turbo's life. This is the main reason I picked Mobil 1.

Hey chasgood! Thanks for the info! like I posted before I'm at around 700 and trying to plan ahead to change over. I don't think that the cost of Amsoil is worth the extra since we have to change the oil every 3 to 5k anyway. I think I'll go with Mobile 1 as well.

Hey chasgood - Never knew this difference in syn's before you discussed it. I have been using Quaker State syn and Mobil 1 syn for years in all my cars including my old '01 PT. Question - is this distinction of group III, group IV identified on the oils bottles so the consumer knows what they are buying?

It is not printed on the bottles. Have to read the fine print at the web sites of the oil companys and even then some don't say.
Mobil sued Castrol over syntech labeling and lost. The judges loosely defining the word synthetic. Hydrocracking makes the length of the oil molecules even like synthetic Group IV oil. I don't know enough about oils to explain it farther.
Edmunds.com forums talked about it for a long time.

A few posts in the forum at bobistheoilguy talk about it too.

Just got back from my first oil change. Mobil 1 5w-30 or 10w-30 standard synthetic is now being marketed on the bottle as the new car oil. This is what I have used for years and it holds up great.
