Installed my Hallman boost controller today. I purchased 2 mosels. The original CNC Billet model w/steel ball in Red. And the RX model in Black. I'm no rocket scientist, but in reading the threads i wanted to be sure that I got the right controller. I installaed the RX controller first (ceramic ball). I did it in the AM and ran to temp and then adjusted it gradually until the Boost Spiked at 15-16 and leveled out at 9-10. All was well, until I ran the cruiser until it was hot (driven 1 hr. at highway speeds kicking in boost once in a while). On my way back home I found a stertch of I 495 w/no cars, cops, and a long straight run. I decide to let her loose. When the boost kicked in (autostick) and passing gear the boost spiked to 19-20 and the waste gate opened completely and shut down the boost. I also git a check engine lite. Following that i backed off the adjustment until it was completely foo, and the turbo still spiked @ 19 & got a check lite again. Returned to stock setup and disco the batt. to remone chk engine. All worked fine. Then I installed the standard model(Steel Ball) and had the boost cranked down as low as I could get it (I was wary) It worked fine so I commenced to adjust it. The adjustment is not as fine, but it is more steady. It spikes momentarily @ 15-16 at the most and then steadies @ 10-12. Ran rigerous test on it this pm and it has worked flawlessly even @ 120-125 mph. I don't know exactlt what to contribute the failure of the first valve other than under heavy accelleration & Boost the ceramic ball valve would open up wide and allow very high boost. I don't know if it is defective or is just too light (Ceramic Ball) fotr this application. This is my first attempt at contributing to this forum, but I love reading all of the stuff.

Well...

I see that other people are enjoing the boost game.

My controller came with the metal ball in it. I was trying to get the ceramic one for testing but I guess your research has shut down my eagerness to try the Ceramic ball upgrade.

The problem with our turbo is the quick spool up times. I thought that with the ceramic ball it would respond faster than the metal one.

Remember keep it on the safe side.

Now we need to fix the excess pressure exaust in the system.

The factory BOV is too small for the high volume now generated by the higher presures of the turbo. we need to find a BOV installation procedure for the PT!

I talked to Exhaust Depot and he is already working this issue. He is tinkering with an idea and should come out with something shortly.

There are some ideas on the forum but none has gotten out of the Idea phase.

After I saw a Turbo Explode in another car at the track, he was boosting 27 PSI, and then saw another car with a huge BOV installed working. It made me think that it is time now to go to the BOV Phase.

This car had an HKS BOV installed and when he let go of the gas, besides the huge hissing sound, you would hear the turbo spooling down with no strange noises. it sounded like an aircraft slowing down. Cool!

Ian - Been reading about the Boost Controller(s) & gages to go along with it. I am not a mechanic so at this stage I want to get the controller / gage required and I want someone to do the installation for me. Where do I go to get the best controller / gage and who do I get to install. One other point - Once the psi is set, do you still need the gage. Didn't want to permanently intall the gage unless necessary. Any info from you would be great. (I am looking at deez92 installed pics and it doesn't look like there is much to it.)

Keefer,

Read the following thread, it should answer all your ?'s
http://www.ptcruiserlinks.com/forum/...?TOPIC_ID=1801

So far, the people (myself included) who have bought the $50 Hallman EX Controller have had much better results fine tuning their boost level. The more expensive Hallman controllers with the ceramic ball seem to be spiking too high, and you really dont want that.

Let us know if you have further questions after reading up on that post.

Matt

Semar,

Boost is invesrly proportional to gas milage.

Higher boost presure means more fuel to compansate. decreasing fuel economy.

In one of my track days runing the car at 14 PSI, in five quarter mile passes I consumed a qarter tank of fuel. In other words : 5 MPT (miles per tank)... this was of course at Wide open throttle. my normal driving was reduced to 9 MPG. But I love the acceleration!!! and that substitutes MPG....

Hi everyone, have my 5 speed GT since Jan 4. This is my first post in
the forum and have read everything in it, lots of great information.
And I'm working on getting the parts for the new intake, the first
preformance mod of hopefully many more to follow. I,d really like to
put a boost controller in next, but have a few questions.

I saw that there is a dual controller, cause Id hate to lose the great
mileage the car gets. Does this unit run like the stock setup until
there the need for SPEED then you can flip the switch from the inside.

Has anyone used one of these yet?

About the pillar pods, it seems to me that they may cut down on
visablty some. How many gauges are needed for this type of setup?
Is the boost the only one needed, cause i read in other forum that you
should have engine managment when you start playing with the boost.
I.m not exactly sure what that means. Was thinking the storage hole
down under the radio is a good place for the gauges, since I don't keep
anything there anyways. I guess would need bracket to hold them at
an angle as to see them better. Haven't looked under there yet to see
how much trouble it would be to route the connections.

But how bad can it be. I'm a little bit of a novice when when it comes to some stuff. I guess you can tell by the questions,Well
I'm glad to be on boardand am learning alot of stuff from these rooms.

Nick

Ive got the dual but havent installed it yet..still waiting for my gauges (hopefully by friday)..I liked the fact that u can simply switch it between 2 settings..one setting very low for normal driving (and better gas milage) and the high setting still within reasonable (and safe!!) levels for the POWER!!
I am not racing my GT but I do have a need for speed....
I can flip the switch and have some fun!!

Rob, have you been following the threads that deal with the difference between the steel ball (less expensive) version of the controller and the ceramic ball version? Not sure which the dual uses.

Inferno Red GT, chrome wheels, chrome AMP fuel door, chrome side spears, PT Cruiser 3rd light diffuser, silencers removed from airbox...ain't this car fun?!?!?
