The knock sensors will tell the computer to pull timing (and maybe dump boost, not sure) so you will definitely get less performance is they come into play.

Also, if you take your 187 HP and correct for a 15% parasitc loss through the drivetrain (multiply 187 x 115%) you come up with 215 HP

Inferno Red GT, chrome wheels, chrome AMP fuel door, chrome side spears, PT Cruiser 3rd light diffuser, silencers removed from airbox...ain't this car fun?!?!?

From what I've read most auto's dyno aroud that. It also seems 5spd. are dynoing at the 205-220 area. (at the wheels) Differences in computer management maybe. I've also seen this by racing my friend who works at a dealership, with him in an auto... the 5 speed hammers him into the ground.

I think 15% is too low for an automatic...I've usually read/heard 15% for a manual, and 25-30% for an automatic. So...multiply his 187 by 125% and you get 233 HP. And if you use 30% it works out to 243HP...which is right about what people were estimating these engines ACTUALLY produce (not what Chrysler CLAIMS they produce .

Take don668's 5 speed numbers and using 15% yields 235-253HP...again, in that ballpark.

So I don't think your numbers sound that bad at all. <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

I agree, 15% is a low figure for an auto.

There is always some discrepancy regarding the "loss" of horsepower that the powertrain components consume. I do have a question regarding the use of a percentage (%) vs. a known figure. While it is impossible for the lay person to know the real loss, a percentage works as a guide. However, I do have one problem with the percentage method.

For example, let's say my stock GT produces the factory claimed 215 HP at the flywheel and I use the percentage method to calculate my RW HP. I get about (using 25%) 161-1/4 HP. That is a loss of 53.75 HP. Sounds a little high, but it is an automatic. Now, let's say I add a bunch of go-fast goodies; manual boost controller, custom intake & exhaust, etc. etc. Say, for argument sake that I gain 30 HP at the flywheel. This gives me flywheel HP of 245 and RW HP (% method) of 183-3/4. Now it shows that I lost 61-1/4 HP through the drivetrain. Keep in mind that nothing else was changed. How can increasing the flywheel HP result in the powertrain requiring more power to be required? Answer: it cannot!

What we really need is an accurate way of determining the actual HP required by a given transmission/drivetrain to be able to compare flywheel HP to factory specs. and to convert RW HP to flywheel HP.

My .02 cents.

Not to be a smartass, but multiplying a number by 115% is not the same thing as losing 15%.

For example, if you have a 15% loss from 100, you have 85. But if you multiply 85 times 115% you only get 97.75.

What you need to do is this formula: x / ( 1 - percentage)

In the example in Jeff V's post above, make x = 85, and percentage = 15%, so ( 85 / ( 1 - .15 ) ) = 85 / .85

which equals 100.

So, to use the numbers presented in the first post, 187hp with a 15% auto-slush loss would make the formula 187 / (1 - .15) = 187 / .85

which equals 220hp.
