Just thought I'd post this for a chuckle . As you know I still don't have all my gauges operational but guess what I saw on my water temp guage the last few days.....140 degrees,idling in traffic then dropping down to about 105 degress at speeds over 30 mph temp outside temp was in the 70's. My water temp guage is a mechanical one, the sensor portion is in the engine bay coiled up waiting to be installed Monday ( need fittings). But I guess if you don't want to reloc the stock sensor you could spend $55.00 or so and install a mechanical water temp guage to monitor underhood temps!

I did this mod today on my car. I fabbed a braket to hold the sensor directly in front or the intake on the side of the air box. Works great! Thanks Dalite.

Thats an excellent MOD!
Email me the pics along with the instructions and I will put it up in my MOD section on my site. Do you ahve an actual gauge in you car that reads outside or inside temp? I wish my SRT had that. WOuld make things a whole lot easier to monitor my intake charge temp.

The temp display I am referring to is the one in the overhead console that measures outside (ambient) temp. I think it was in all models except the base model (and I may not be correct on that). flashbk2 was referring to a mechanical water temp gauge that the sensor wasn't installed in the water jacket, but left coiled inside the engine compartment. Apparently the suction of the air over the sensor as it enters the air box makes a difference in the temp, and is probably a more accurate indication od the actual air entering the turbo. Still, the actual compression of the air in the turbo creates heat, and the charge air cooling system does it's best to cool it back off. Ideally, a virtual gague from a data logger connected to a laptop would give the closest actual temp of the air at the throttle body. Then, it is the discresion of the author of the software whether the output is reported as a voltage, resistance, 1 to 10 scale, or actually converted to a temperature reading that could have real world usefullness outside the data logger's operating environment.. |

DALITE:I did not believe your testing,I thought some was wrong.But I saw the light and you are right.I did the same tests,I had driven the car for an hour before moving the sensor to inside the stock air ell that sticks out of the air box.I drove about 4 miles at full operating temp.It was 66 outside and the inlet temp. did not go over 77,i stoped at at lease 10 lights(some long) OLD HEAD

Old Head, it is truly hard to believe. As long as there is motion, the temp stays low. When idling at a stop light, with the AC running, there is potential for a rise in the engine compartment heat; until there is again motion. The condenser, radiator and inter cooler all vent back to the engine compartment, but the ambient heat is soon cleared by the motion of the car; as far as the intake sees at the airbox.
My claim of 5 degrees difference may not be accurate where stop and go driving is involved. On the road, it seems to be fairly close. This is a real eye-opener. |

If I remember corectly,for every 10 deg.of intake air drop you get about 1% of power increase,we are seeing about 10 deg.over outside,and the most we could is with total outside air would be less then 3 hp.I know PT DAVE likes the 100 hp. sound,but i am looking for power,and wait to here from Chipmunk and his 14.7 machine OLD HEAD
