Default RE: Losing Air

I posted a few weeks ago about those chrome rims on the wifes 03 Turbo losing air every other day. We brought it back to WallyWorld severaL times about the problem. They would break the bead and put new valve stems etc, etc. Every other 3 days, she would lose 8 lbs. 15 lbs. of air in all of the tires.

We finally gave the wheels to our friends at work. They broke down the wheels and thoroughly grinded the rims and reamed out the valve stem hole. You should have seen all tshe grit that tahey got out of there. WE took the tirers back to WallyWorld and showed them the envelope with all tshe grit. I told the wife, if they try and charge us for the balancing, we AINT paying for it. They did the balance, and didnt charge us for the balance.

During the last 3 weeks, we havent lost any AIR AT ALL.

If you guys have that problem, that is the way to cure your problems.

Great feedback Kenny. I'm sure that will help a lot of owners with the same problem. There must have a been a whole batch of GT rims like yours that had the leakage problem. Most of us never did. I traded up to the GT rims 2 years ago and never had a leak.

So your saying that the grit came from the rim of the tire or the rim of the GT wheels?

The grit, etc, etc, came from the mag wheel. Our friend put the crap in a standard envelope and it filled the bottom 1/2 inch all across.

Like I said, its been 2 weeks, and the wifes tires have not lost 1 lb. of air.

Those GT rims are pretty and shiny and expensive and generally pieces of crap. I've had several bead leaks in addition to the chroming just sloughing off.

Thanks guys for your comments. It's very interesting how things can go wrong with our vehicles. It's always a pleasure to find out the exact cause of the problem, and the corrective measures.

I had the non-chrome rims when I got my GT in 03. When my friend traded in his GT last fall we traded rims and now I have the chrome ones. At first they didn't lose air but after this past winter I lose about 2-5 lbs a day in one of the wheels. Looks like it's time to head to the garage. [?]

Update on losing air in Crome Wheels.

After 6 weeks of having our chrome wheels grinded down and the valve stem holes reamed out by our friends, we only lost 2 lbs. of air in each tire. We are very happy with the results. I hope all of you know now how to solve the problem of lost air in those cheap chrome wheels.
