Welcome.
From the official website: 230 hp 20 city / 27 hwy with manual, 19/26 for auto. Since you said manual, it HAS to be the GT, which takes premium. I have a turbo "lite", which uses regular gas, but only comes with auto. I am now up to 26MPG overall, which I think is great, and is gotten by not punching the gas to accelerate - I go fast, just take it a bit easier getting to speed. ![]()

Just to clarify, a GT doesn't require premium. You need it to get the most bang out of it but you can run regular just fine. If you go to Stage 1 then Premium is highly recommended. I've actually run 89 octane in my Stage 1 GT for normal driving with no issues at all. I didn't try any wide open throttle runs though while running 89.

If you want to run with regular don't buy a GT. $2-$3 more dollars a tankful to use premium is not going to kill anybody. One fill up a week will cost you a whopping $8-$12 more a month. Running with regular, even 89, is going to pull timing and you'd better hope the anti knock is stopping any damage to the engine because you won't always hear it. I wouldn't take the chance. On the gas door it says to use premium only.
My '03 5 speed GT got 22-24 mpg in combo city, highway and freeway driving. It was modified to 280 hp and I don't always have a light foot. If I stayed out of boost I could get 3-4 more mpg, but the fun factor made it almost impossible to stay out of boost. [?] As far as the snow a friend from New York says with good snow tires and the FWD you can get most anywhere.

MeanGreen's post showed me I skipped the snow question -
Get rid of the stock Good-for-a-Year tires - they're not good in rain or snow. Losta folks up North have base-model 15" steel wheels for winter because: 15" wheels and tires are much cheaper than 17" Keeps the salt from attacking the 17" alloys a narrower tread is better for snow Unless you get tons of snow, you'll be fine with good tires - just follow my cardinal rule of snow driving - do everything gradually - accelerating, steering, and braking - do them all slowly and you'll be fine. I had no problem with either of my PTs in snow - they got better when I replaced Goodyear with Michelin....

I have an 03 Turbo with Stage 1. Gas mileage varies between 21 -28.
I did a test Regular vs Premium and it makes a 15% difference in performance and a 10 % difference in mileage. Almost enough to make up the difference in the cost. There is a knock sensor which retards the timing and boost on regular. You're better off using premium but you can use regular with no damage, just lesser performance. |
