Default Rear Sway Install Problem

Decided to just go ahead a buy some aftermarket sway bars rather than wait for the factory issue to get resolved (kind of wanted bigger bars anyway). I went with the Eibach bars and got all the mounting hardware from my dealer.

My question to any of you who have installed a rear sway bar on your GT is: How did you bolt the retainers to the rear axle. According to the instructions in the Service Manual as well as the PT DIY site it says to just screw into the threads in the rear axle. My problem is that there are no threads in my rear axle. The only thing there is a hole which appears to be about 1/2" in diameter (located right above the slot where you hook in the retainers) but nothing that the bolt could "bite" into. Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Mahalo,
Mark

You have to buy nuts that fit into the slots and match the threads of the bolts . It's a tight fit, so don't do what I did (I used nylock nuts) it's a "bitch" to get them tight .

I ran into the same problem - even though I ordered all the specific sway bar DC parts posted on this site, the nut wasn't included. I had it over at my buddy's shop and we were all scatching our heads saying - "what the f---?" It's REALLY hard to get that nut in place. You need one guy to shove the bar with bracket close as possible to the axle, one guy to position the nut and try to hold it in place with an open end and a screwdriver, and a third guy to gently feed in the bolt and tighten. It's a cluster - and we had it up on the rack.
I bought one of those PT service manual CD's off ebay, just so I could see how they did it. THREADED HOLE? yeah right... must be part of the whole bean-counter/eliminate-the-sway-bar issue.[xx(]
have fun - it WILL be worth it once it's on.

I noticed you said:
"Decided to just go ahead a buy some aftermarket sway bars rather than wait for the factory issue to get resolved"

What is the factory issue, and how should it be resolved?

Also, couldn't you use a tap and thread the existing hole and forget about the nuts?

No cuz all you'd be trying to thread would be the welded bracket where the nut should set .

Check out the "Sticky" at the top of the General Turbo Discussion forum regarding the rear sway bar deletion.
