Default Rotor paint??

Since I am receiving my new wheels soon, I had a thought...

I do not want to mount my new wheels against the rusty rotor surface. Does anyone have a recommendation for a high-temperature paint that will survive the heat generated from braking?

Thanks,

Scott

You can paint your calipers but not your rotors. Well, OK, you could paint your rotors I suppose, but you shouldn't! Any rust on those rotors will come and go as you drive and brake. If you spray your calipers and get any overspray on the calipers it will grind/burn off when you drive it the first time anyway! Painting the calipers is pretty straightforward. Google the G2 caliper paint system, a brush on kit, and shop around for the best price. You should be able to pick up a kit for around $38 and there's more than enough to do all four calipers and have a bit left over. I used it on my car just a few weeks ago.

I assume you are talking about painting the rotor hat. Any 1200° high temp paint should work. Just clean the rotor hat of any rust (may have to spray a light coat of rust converter primer) and mask off the rotor surface before painting the hat area. Black and grey/gunmetal/aluminum are popular colors to use or pick your own color. Another alternative is to get them cad plated or powder coated.

Mike,

I should have been more clear in my request. I just wanted to paint the rotor surface that makes contact with the wheel (the "hat," although it's flat not raised).

Concerning caliper painting, I was at my local Advance Auto parts, and they had a Duplicolor caliper paint kit for $14. Any good?

Scott

Scott I used the engine high temp paint to paint mine , I was next to Dart @ Cleveland and he had painted his "hats" 2 years ago with regular ppg paint and they still looked fine !

If you spend the $$$ on the G@ you will be very pleased. It is not just a thin coat of paint. It is a catalized paint that goes on thick and gloss, self levels and stays glossy like an OEM painted caliper. It is also very tough. I highly recommend it.

I had real good luck by painting my Mustangs calipers red by using brake caliper, drum and rotor paint by VHT. It is 900* F rated and I double coated it. Used a $6.00 11 oz can on the fronts. So far it still looks good after about a year!! I put mine on new calipers so cleaning was not a big issue. I understand the surface has to be really clean!!

No problem...it's just that I've seen pix of people who actually painted their rotors....what the heck were they thinking??? As for the Duplicolor caliper paint kit, I've heard good things about it, plus I think you can trust the Duplicolor name. But I agree with Cal Cruzer on the G2, plus you don't have to worry about masking things off, overspray, etc. Yeah, G2 is twice the price, but it could save you some headaches as well. Your call, just post some pix when you're done!
