Default Drive Shaft Question on GT Cruiser

I am looking at changing the transmission in my PT to a GT Gear box, my question is this; do the GT Cruiser's use equal length drive shafts or are they like the standard PT's with a short shaft and a longer right hand shaft.

Does the SRT-4 box fit a 2 Litre PT ?
The biggest problem we have in Australia is everything in the states is for the 2.4 Litre and we only get the 2 Litre which is basically a Neon DOHC motor.

I was under the impression that the SRT motor was completely different to the PT.

We dont get SRT's in Australia so we have only what we find on the internet to guide us by. [xx(]

The engine is the same in the GT and the SRT, both are 2.4L turbo engines. If you feel the PTGT 5spd will fit then the SRT-4 should also fit. Definitely need to research it! I would try contacting some of the tuners and ask for their opinions. Try Howell, Stockum(?), PSI-FI etc.

Yeh I tried Howell (the built my engine and shipped it down under to me) however the guy I spoke with was less than helpful and had no idea about anything I asked.

Maybe I should ring Gary Howell back and ask him personally.

Does anyone actually know if they use equal length drive shafts on the GT?

The GT Cruiser axles are not equal length. I just upgraded my axles through The Driveshaft Shop. The axles are also different than the ones used on the SRT-4.

The SRT-4 Gearbox may fit the PT. I am sure it will mate up to the engine but you may have some issues with it fitting in the engine bay and such.

From the service manual:
Diesel and Turbo Models
Vehicles equipped with the 2.2L Turbo Diesel and
the 2.4L Turbo Gasoline utilize an equal-length halfshaft
system. The system incorporates two halfshaft
assemblies (left and right) that consist of an inner
and outer constant velocity (CV) joint and a solid
interconnecting shaft, and an interm [:I]

Here is a picture of the axles for my GT.

These are the axles that I had made at Driveshaftshop.com
You can see the the outer sections are the same length with the passenger side having the solid interconnecting shaft.

There was also a post recently on the SRT4 forum that the tranny from the SRT4 was about 1.5" to long to fit in the PT engine bay.

Deen

P.S. Keith, what'd you shell out for the axles???

The axles were $550. They reused the origional housings that fit into the tranmission but the rest is new. They are rated for over 500 hp. I will post a pic of the part that was reused.
