From what I understand it is illegal for anybody and for any muffler shop to remove the cat (got to have a cat?). The shop I had my exhaust done at had a poster stating this. My exhaust was done from the cat back, muffler removed. I have had police behind me, beside me and so on. The noise didn't bother them. It's just a nice sounding roar. 2003 Electric Blue GT Edited by - bigdogdad on 04/24/2003 15:20:31 Edited by - bigdogdad on 04/24/2003 15:47:29 |

There a number of high flow cats on the market, so removing the Cat should not really be an issue, Maybe a 3" exhaust system with a high flow cat would also help the turbo spool up...

I think I read that by removing the cat would foul up the computer? Not sure about that.....

If you want to go this way, you might try just gutting the cat, as in taking a big metal spike to the insides until there is just an empty pipe. Most OBDII cars have a 02 sensor after the cat, so this will mess up the readings from that sensor, but there is a device that sends a normal reading to the ecu to correct this. Im not sure where they sell them, try looking around on a WRX forum. Oh yeah, it is illegal to run with no cat, but if there are no emmissions testing in your state, who cares. Thats what I do here in az.

it's also illegal to remove a properly working cat. So if you do R&R it, you may have to prove the OEM was faulty.<img src=icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle>

My local muffler guy put in 2 1/2 inch from the cat to the tips. He put after the cat a 30 inch resonator ending in the tips which are stainless with resonators in them. No muffler in the system. Right now, to me anyway, it sounds great. A real nice roar but not to bad. Plenty of police have been around me and it doesn't seem to bother them in the least. I am more worried about the "Cruisin" third brake light, but then again, the police have been behind me plenty of times with no problem. Problem will be you and New York inspection. No muffler, no resonator, I doubt it. ![]() 2003 Electric Blue GT |
