Hey all .... I am considering purchasing a set of Boyd wheels, as I cannot find anything slicker for the Cruiser. I was wondering if it is at all possible to simply purchase (2) GT-sized wheels (as they cost $100 more for each) for the front, and (2) NON GT-sized wheels for the rear? What would be the pro's and con's of such? FYI - Boyd's GT's are 18x7, while the NON-GT's can be 18x8. I assume the GT wheels make accommodations for the larger front brakes. Is the rear the same situation? Are the brakes larger than the N/A's? Are there any problems with having an 7 inch wheel for the front and an 8 inch wheel for the rear on a FWD vehicle?

No doubt, they are beautiful wheels. Have you seen his show? I wouldn't give that guy a dime of my money! He's an @$$hole. This quote was found on a search of his name....
He has gone bankrupt with different corporations twice - the first being "Hot Rods by Boyd" - each time stiffing his creditors and buying back the company's assets from bankruptcy court for pennies on the dollar.

To address onedivinehammer's question, I don't know about brake clearance for the rears, but there is no inherent problem running wider wheels on the rears than the fronts. In fact, I like the idea as you could run slightly wider tires on the rear. Yeah, I know, the car is FWD so there's no real need for wider tires out back, but I still like that staggered look.
As for purple04's comments.....I regularly watch both American Hot Rod (Boyd Coddington's show) and Overhaulin' (with Chip Foose). Both shows build some pretty cool cars, but the real difference is the designer. Foose is a freakin' genius, and a downright nice guy. Boyd is a rather acerbic, arrogant jerk who doesn't lift a finger to help out. In fact, it seems that on the rare occassion he does to help he causes more problems than solutions. I wouldn't let him touch one of my cars, but I'd kill to have Foose work his magic on our old Camaro. |

To continue the threadjack, I've gone so far as to print out he application for Overhaulin', but the guys at work and I agree that I don't have the temperment to have my car "stolen" and have my chain yanked for a week. They'ed have a hard time getting any of my cars out, too. You thought the Corvette was tough to liberate? Hah! Besides, the '40's drivetrain/chassis is 90% done.

The wheel width for a `7x8 is not much more obvious than a 17x7. Esp if you are running the same tire on both. You can put a 225 or 235 on the smaller width rim without a prob.
That's a good idea...

Boyd's wheels are nice, but I'd go with the Foose Type S
http://www.chipfoose.com/type-s.aspx They have a wider size range and are really nice. On the TV show front: One of Boyd's workers (Charlie) quit his shop and is now working for Chip Foose. Kinda says something right there.

Foose "heat" wheels are COOL. I agree with all of the sentiments about Boyd. Great looking wheels but doen't merit support after what he's done to other businesses at least twice. I like supporting those with integrity and class. Hope you can consider that. Just my .02!

BTW, the GT's front calipers are 5mm wider than the rears. So the offset issue is only pertinent on the fronts. The rear calipers are the same as N/A.
On turbo lites, they get standard calipers on all corners. This is why Mike in Orange has my old wheels ![]()

I think this might stir things up a bit.
Boyd and Foose are both a couple of Prima Donnas who want to charge you extra for their names. I wouldn't subsidize their egos with my money. [:0] I'm not sure about this but aren't their wheels billet and not as strong as forged wheels? That's OK for a show car but not out in the rough, tough, real world. You can get a lighter, stronger wheel from a company like Centerline, that will allow your PT to take off faster and ride better at a fraction of the cost of a "designer lable" wheel. And they won't break the bank should you ever need to replace one. [ ]"And now you know the rest of the story (at least about my 2 cents)." |
