Default 225/45/17

i went all the way back to 2003 on this forum to see if anyone actualy has a 225/45/17 on their stock gt rim. If you do please post up here. i have been reading alot of back and forth second hand info on the possible aplication of this size tire. I was at an after market auto show and got a great deal on a set of hankook ventus in that size. The guy who sold them to me said he had a GT also and they worked just fine. I havent put them on yet, i was waiting till spring. So if any of my fellow GTers are out there riding on that size please let me know. p.s my GT is lowered if that makes difference

The stock pt rims are about 17x6, I believe the highest you can go is 215/45 (or was it 50?)/17 on the stock rims. I had an aftermarket rim 17x7.5 @ 225/45/17 and those fitted perfectly.

i have heard that before and i have heard that it does work. Heck i even heard that a 235 is gonna work, but all the info seems to be coming from people that "heard". If you tried to fit a 225/45/17 on a stock GT rim, and it didnt work let me know. If you tried it and it did work let me know also. I would like difinitive 1st party info on this issue. I bought the tires from someone who said they would work. Im just hoping that they do fit, and would like first hand experiance to tell me, if there is any.

You can fit a 225/45 on a 6" wide wheel it will be a tight fit getting them installed on the wheel but they will fit. with a 45 series tire however the sidewall has to very stiff so this will cause some minor cupping of the tire and may lead to some premature tire wear.
Also a 225/45 is a closer match in diam. to the stock diam. so the speed reading will be more accurate.I am running a 215/50 and my speedometer is off bye about 1-2 mph.

Any good tire shop should be able to mount a 225/45 tire though.

I'm running 225/45/17 Hankook K-104's on 7" rims. I have 16,000 miles on them and I'm getting center wear. I keep the tires at 38 psi and would lower the pressure to even the wear, but I've already bent one rim on a pothole. I also wanted to try mounting them on the stock rims, but most tire shops that I went to advised against it. I think your center wear would be even greater than what I am experiencing. A 7 1/2" rim is actually a better fit for the 225/45.

What's the manufacturers recommended Air Pressure?? [:0] 38 is GY's for the stock tires. Perhaps these are stiffer & as a result with this air pressure wearing the center. That is usually an indication of over inflation. [:I]

The advice about the stock rims is sound advice. [8)]

Thanks for the tip PTurbed. I just went out to the Hankook website and they list the maximum tire pressure as 50 psi - no minimum given. The approved rim sizes are 7.0" - 8.5", which means that the 7" will probably cause some rounding of the center portion of the tread. I may drop the pressure a couple of lbs in order to get a little more tire life. I just have to watch out for the potholes!

With tires, I always try to stay within the manufacturers recommendations. The 6" wheel width we live with is a bummer as anything wider than the standard 205/50 is not rated to run on a 6" wheel.

In actual practice, as long as you are not an aggressive driver when it comes to cornering you should be fine. The sidewalls of a 225/45 are physically bent in at the wheel on a 6" rim. Under normal driving conditions this is not a problem but under extreme side loading conditions it is certainly not optimal.

Not So! Check the Tire Guide. You will see that 215-50-17 are the largest recommended tire for the 17x6 stock rim. I have Conti Extreme's on my 03GT @ 44psi.Runs and handles great. At 60mph I read 59mph.
