I read a post on one of the forums lately from a new "05 GT convertible owner who stated his OEM wheels were 7". He was shopping tires and said that his tire dealer measured and confirmed the wheel width as being 7".
I think it may be possible that whoever did the measure may not have had enough snap to know to measure from inside edge to inside edge and measured outside to outside instead. Anyone have any actual facts? What's the real story? [:I] |

I have also read this is true but cannot confirm "it is fact". [:I]

I posted that and I can confirm now that the wheels on my 05 GT convert are indeed 17X7 w/40mm offset. After going threw 3 sets of tires from my local guy this past week who measured the width for me,I finally settlled on Perelli P zero nero 225/45 zr17, load 91W. Well, I decided to clean up the wheels after the last visit to the tire shop and took them off to do it. After throughlly cleaning the back side of the rim, under the brake dust there it was, part numbers, other identity tags and the measurements inside one of the spokes. Anyone else with a GT convert should check the inside spokes of their rims(you will have to clean out the dust first), if you didn't get a 17X7-40 then you should complain to your dealer, because you probably got rims from a GT 4D instead. They are still only getting the 6"wide according to carsdirect.com. I trust their info because every time I thought they were wrong on a spec it turned out they were right. About the tag issue, I don't know why my build tag doesn't show the rim size and my window sticker didn't list it either, but the size is listed inside the spokes. It is also probably listed on the inside spokes of all the alloy rims put on the PT GT along with the offset. If I had a digital camera I would post a pic of the measurement just because the size issue about all the rims has been such a "hot button"...maybe this is the perfect excuse to get one...
BTW, when I purchased my car in 8/04, I saw a lot of GT converts that had the GT 4D chrome rims on them and the manufactures option listed for the addtional $600or so. So you were getting "chrome rims" but not the ones that came on the car. After speaking with a few dealerships that had no GT converts w/4D rims, I was told they never got any converts with the old rims and if I had seen that those dealerships were ripping people off. My theory is that many dealerships took off the original chromed star rims and told people they were "optional" and ripped off the customer by charging them extra to put back on the original rims that came on the car!

I believe that you do indeed have 7" wheels based on your info. The mystery is that nowhere in any of the Chrysler specs is that noted. It seems to me that if you also got the OEM tires in the 205/50-17 size on those 7" wide wheels the fit and look would have been a bit odd. Your new wider tires should not only look better but work better.
Do you have chrome or alloy "Star" wheels or does Chrysler only make one or the other? The reason I ask is I may keep my eye out for some factory style "take offs" being sold by an owner who went to an after market set of wheels. |

It's just possible that DC is now putting the larger wheel on the cars. But you never know how evil Detroit is when they try to rip off the poor unsuspecting American car buyer (please read sarcasm here) and give him something other than what he paid for.
Only way to be sure is compare build dates on the converts. Count yourself lucky for the larger wheels while the rest of use have been driving our GTs with smaller wheels and loving it anyway. Quote:

My car was built in May '04 so I do not think DC is just now putting them on the convertibles. I have the "star" chrome rims, but they are the same as the "star" alloys, just with chrome on the visible side. The tires did look a little funny, kind of smallish. My new perelli's look like they should have been there all along. I finally did get a digital camera for internet posting but it seems like a big P.I.T.A. to post pics here with having to post them elsewhere on the net and then copy/paste the address... As for the spec being posted by DC anywhere, I still haven't found it and that leads me to believe DC did that for the sole purpose of letting their dealerships rip people off (refering to my last post).

These are the rims that came with my GT convertible. I have not had the time to take off the wheel and check the inside. I don't believe the dealers took off the original wheels and replace them. My opinion is that they ran out of GT chrome wheels and replace them with the touring chromes. I have seen a lot of GTs on the lots and had to take a second look because the wheels were from the touring model. Also it cost me an $ 700 option for the chrome wheels for all 4 wheels. One of guys I met at Cruise the Falls had the silver star wheels on his convertible but wanted to upgrade to the chrome. What he found out was they are made by American Racing and to upgrade them would cost $ 700 for each wheel. I felt good about the choice I made.

I really like your wheels but they don't look like the chrome OEMs on the 05 GTs I've seen in my area. I would say you got real lucky on the wheels and your dealer took care of you with a great price. [?]
