Shipping costs reflect the size and weight of the parts, your location, and current carrier rates (including discounts we receive as a high-volume shipper). To minimize shipping costs, choose parts that can ship from the same location. RockAuto does not profit at all on the shipping costs. We think it makes more sense to set prices low and show what it really costs to deliver your order to you, passing on the cost and savings from decisions you make.Thank you.

I'm performing a timing belt and water pump replacement on my wife's 01 PT Cruiser. It's a big ticket purchase for me, a retiree on a modest budget nowadays.

The parts totaled $155. Then, Rockauto added $50 in shipping fees. Yep, Rockauto raised the price a whopping 30% *:-O surprise

Un-fortunately for you Auto Parts Wholesale has the same price for parts with no shipping fees what-so-ever. So, since I'm buying by price I will not be buying from Rockauto.

As a very experienced parts purchaser, and a professional estimator by trade, I see Rockauto has slipped into the typical successful American business spiral into greed and excessive profit taking. Take this note to Rockauto management. They need a wake up call.

I'll be posting the DIY on the Timing Belt as soon as the parts arrive and it will include the reassembly.

RockAuto offers reliably low prices everyday. RockAuto does not profit on the shipping costs, and we charge the customer exactly what the carriers charge us to ship your package to your location. Thank you.

I also doubt that that statement could apply to every part that they sell. But if true, then they probably make up those low prices by pumping up the shipping charges.

I've had some issues with some past purchases from RA, and when I really looked into the parts that I purchased, I found that I could get genuine OEM parts from my local dealership, for not that much more than from RA, and I could get the parts now and not have to deal with any shipping damages.

RockAuto.com has never offered free shipping on orders over $100, and RockAuto has also never offered free shipping coupon codes. Shipping is never free. Carriers must be paid for their work. Actual shipping costs vary widely depending on what you buy and where you are. "Free shipping" means higher prices to cover the average shipping cost and using profits from some orders to offset losses on others.

I've noticed that Rock Auto seems to no longer be offering free shipping on orders over $100. And their discount codes for free shipping seem to have all expired too. I agree that something seems to be up with them. All companies seem to go through these cycles. Just like brand loyalty, your buying experience with any retailer this year can no longer be based on what you experienced last year. Modern successful companies change owners, management and strategies too much nowadays.

For the more popular parts, you can often find the same parts on Amazon for about the same price as Rock Auto. And shipping is free if you have Prime. Of course, Amazon has terrible application charts. So you will need to look up the part number somewhere else such as one of the Parts Store websites. I still buy some from Rock Auto when the price is right. But for me, I now believe I buy the most automotive parts from Amazon. And a close second is Advance Auto. With their 30% and $40 off online discount codes and free store pickup, Advance sometimes beats the online retailers.

Hopefully, Rock Auto will bring their free shipping options back. I've always liked their huge selection of stuff. But like I said, companies change a lot now.

I know I've got free shipping on most larger orders in the past. If the previous free shipping started at $150 or $200 instead of $100, my point still stands. Also, many of the reputable discount code sites have older codes for free shipping. But all are expired. And your shipping cost do appear to have risen, which is the point of this thread.

And yes, everyone has to be paid for their work. It's condescending for you to indicate that we, your customers, don't know that. But if your shipping costs make you more expensive than the competition, than you are more expensive. As I said, the "magic" of Rock Auto has been the low prices along with good service and wide selection. Take away the low prices due to high shipping, then the thrill is gone.

On this and other forums, members often discuss our experiences and perceptions of the companies we do business with. If this experience is that your company is now sometimes higher than the competition due to shipping cost, then the way to remedy that is to find a way to reduce costs. Just saying our statements aren't true does nothing to remedy our experiences nor our perceptions. Look what's happened here. I was once a very happy customer of yours and recommended you to others. But now, I will be much less likely to do that due to your shipping cost and blanket denial of our concerns.

Since the start of the company in 1999, RockAuto has never offered free shipping, regardless of the order total. Additionally, all "free shipping" discount codes posted on other websites are not generated by RockAuto, and are not valid. We apologize that the shipping costs seem to be high for your location, however, we are unable to offer free shipping without raising our prices to compensate for the shipping charges.
To address our customer concerns on shipping costs, we have created a help page and a video discussing ways to help minimize your shipping costs: https://www.rockauto.com/help/?page=2#MINSHIPCOST.

I just did a quick check...

Shipping rates and guidelines changes for 2017 through many almost all shippers has increased.
We use LBC every few months and the last shipment last week went up in price from back in November by 7 bucks.
The USPO has also increase their stamp from Rates are increasing from $0.47 to $0.49. First-Class Mail Flat.
Amazon has a very different contract with many of the shippers they use including an exclusive with USPO.

I beg to differ with you on this statement, as using online shipping calculators, I have been able to find lower shipping charges than what RA charged me on some of my past orders.

In fact, on one order I paid for expedited shipping and did not receive that service, nor did I receive a refund for basically getting basic ground delivery service.

First, I have received free shipping. I guess I'll have to drag up the invoices. Maybe we can do that offline.

Also since you brought it up, I've been through that help page of yours. You have to admit that your shipping system is frustrating. You can have a larger order with a reasonable shipping cost, then add one small thing, and suddenly your shipping cost skyrockets.

As I said earlier, we should not expect you to have a shipping system as large or elegant as Amazon. But what you have now is quite frustrating at times.

Since the conversation has gone this way, I am going to suggest that you consider a free shipping option again. Yes, you would have to bury costs within the cost of products. However, it would allow you to spread the shipping costs across the system so they would be more level. This would prevent customers feeling the shipping cost are sometimes very high depending on what they order. Also, if you do large enough volumes, you can make some of your suppliers absorb more of the cost when they drop ship. This would help prevent those strange spikes in shipping we sometimes see with items coming from different locations. Of course, customers wouldn't even see this since a more level shipping upcharge would be applied across the board in the cost of the product.

I offer these as suggestions from your customers. While I know we won't change anything today. I do ask that you take these and the other concerns raised in this thread by your customers back to decision makers in your company. Change has to begin somewhere.

Below is a copy of one of my RA orders, please note at the orange arrow the $30.99 that I was charged for Priority Mail Express shipping. RA certainly most likely gets shipping discounts as being a volume customer.

Using today's USPS website to calculate shipping charges, which are most likely higher now than when this RA order was placed last year, the most expensive method that USPS offers, today, from Norcross, GA 30071 to Hurst, TX 76053, is $23.75.

In the case of my "express shipping" package, it arrived 5 days later, from the shipping notification that I received from RA, which amounts to nothing more than basic ground delivery service which would be about $5-$6. So the real question is, what really did RA pay to ship my order, when I was charged $30.99 which is none of the rates that USPS charges.

Using the RA website, today, to order the same parts, your shipping calculator estimates 2 Business Day Express shipping at $11.99.

I might also add that I had to return an item, on a different order, and I used your shipping label of which $5.35 I was charged for return shipping charges, when to ship a similarly sized package to me would have been $3.99 via First Class Mail.

So this is another instance of RA making a profit off me for the shipping charges, and I'm just one of your many customers, and I was a farily new customer at the time, and if you've done this to me, then I feel fairly certain in saying that you have done the same to many of your other customers, as well. It may not be much of a price difference, but if this happens on a lot of your customers, then that all totaled can add up to quite a chunk of $. Now that's some customer service.

Dead Horse.gif

Looks like we are beating a dead horse trying to convince RockAuto their customer service and shipping issues need to be improved. I haven't bought from Rockauto for a few months.
