Yep, RockAuto is still a good value most of the time. But the actual charge for shipping can be a real minus rather than a plus.

Often on larger orders, I have to spend more time working out a "shipping strategy" than it takes to find and order the parts. And when the strategy doesn't work out, Amazon or even Advance Auto (w/online discounts) wins out on both price and speed of shipping.

As a friendly suggestion from a devoted customer and big fan of RockAuto, I'd like to suggest that RockAuto look into developing some kind of "Prime" shipping program where you pay an annual fee and then get free express shipping for a year. This way, customers wouldn't have to worry about items costing more and taking longer from "outlying warehouses". And there would be no more of those Warehouse "A" versus Warehouse "B" concerns.

Not only will this make it easier and faster for customers, but will also help combat competition from Amazon which appears to actually be price matching RockAuto on some items but then offering Prime shipping on them too.

PS: Consider some better TV commercials too. Since I buy so much stuff from RockAuto, my wife notices your commercials. She says the little cheesy cartoon characters look like Beavis and Butthead.

Many people don't spends that much time...for most single part(s) needed because of a break down. Mabeeeeee on a project or minor needed repair?

Most people find the part "click" and pay .

Majority of other forums (subject in general) members dont go to such extremes to order parts in the same mention as I described above.

When recently ordering a TIPM from RockAuto I encountered a sort of an issue with their electronic online catalog, where there is an error.

On their website it lists the Dorman 599-938:

Per the Dorman website and their customer service rep that I had contacted, that part number is not valid:

The correct TIPM for my vehicle is 599-909, but it does not appear in the filter for my PT, but if you enter the part on their website, it will list the item for sale:

When I contacted RockAuto Customer Service this is the reply that I received:

"Thank you for the email. The data that we receive from
Dorman specifies that Dorman 599938 is the correct TIPM for
the 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser 2.4L L4 Convertible (and
therefore this part does not fit the Wagon version).

We regularly receive new data from manufacturers, so if
there is a new part added by a manufacturer, we will
typically add it to our catalog when we next receive
data.

We look forward to doing business with you!

Thank you,

Colin

I haven't read the whole thread so some of this may have been covered.

The original poster says " cost too much to ship " but does not provide a detailed description of what they ordered and where it was coming from / going to.

This is like saying " I took my car to X garage for brakes and they charged me $ 1,000 ". Without it being stated that the car owner put ATF in the braking system and it needed every part that fluid touches replaced including the ABS pump replaced.

I've used RA for years and their service has been just fine. I also don't order parts just to see what they look like and return them so my experience with returns is minimal. I did get a bad MAF once, dealt direct with the manufacturer to set things up with RA for a smooth warranty return.

As for shipping, the costs are fine. Virtually all the time a new shipping box is used, this takes $ to purchase. I've noticed shipping costs go up if I'm ordering something small then throw a few wiper blades or other long items on the order. Long items need a larger box and extra shipping cost. Shippers calculate weight and size, a large light weight item can cost more than a small heavy one because the large / light takes up space in the truck that otherwise could have been used for many small heavy packages.

I'd really like to see a " Ships from zip code XXXXX " or " pick closest shipping to you " so I can judge shipping times. RA used to have tighter shipping time estimates ( like a 2 day window ) but that sometimes has expanded to a catch all " 1 to 6 day shipping time"

I have seen adding an item dramatically change shipping time to the point I've split the order to avoid a possible long delay.

I'm hoping RA keeps their easy to use / low bandwith site. I generally only have access to a dial up internet connection and there are lots of sites with tons of fluff and no better content that does nothing.

I just did some parts ordering through RA. I thought the shipping rates were fair, and reasonable on the items I ordered. Will use again.
