Default Fuel pump relay overheats

My 01 cruiser started then stalled like it ran out of fuel. i found the fuel pump relay very hot and switched it with the horn relay. The car started and ran a little while then quit. Again it overheated it, and both relays wont beep the horn now or start the pt. why are they burning up?

It would be my guess your fuel pump is going bad or at the very least running continuous till the relay fails.

Maybe the pump itself is drawing too much current. Have you been running the fuel in the gas tank lower than 1/4 tank lately.

Ask Chromenut for section 8W and Fuel system chapter of FSM.
IIRC, there were more circuits than the fuel pump on that relay-
O2 sensors, but my a quick look at my FSM just confuses me-
there's a feed for the ASD relay, too.
It says DG/WT goes to fuel pump- get an ammeter and test for draw.

A properly functioning fuel pump actually draws very little- 3.6 amps in my Neon.

So i put in a replacement fuel pump today with the same results. Still overheating and frying the relay. With a new relay the car will start and run for a minute then start to run rough and die out and the relay is smoking hot.
