Default New from Michigan

New here looking for answers in tech section.

Had 2002 model since about 2006. I didn't pay attention to the suggested timing belt replacement and it broke at 130k miles. First garage I towed it to turned down the job. They suggested a dealership. Big mistake, they said the engine was toasted. I said I will have it towed to my brothers house. He was layed-off then and pretty good with a wrench. Far as we could tell the mechanic never did the tests he claimed. Valves were fine and didn't need a new engine. Complained to the service manager, he said I misunderstood. Right!.. He gave back 1/2 of wrong diagnostics charge.

Now working through TCM issue posted in tech section.

My 16 year old will be driving this now, put all new brakes on, front struts, radiator and fan With 185,000 miles it needed some work.

Check the Lower Control Arms which hold the lower ball joint.
Someone before me broke of the grease fittings, and I had a ball joint pop out of the socket, lucky at 20 mph, but lost all control and it took me to the right side of the road.

Forgot to mention I also changed the ball joints. Did one 2 years ago and noticed the other was ready to brake when changing the struts. I know some replace the lower control arm but I just replaced the ball joint.

Also have done both front wheel bearings. Real pain, have to pull the steering knuckle and take it to a shop to have the bearing pressed out and new one in.

Made sure I bought the US made bearings.
