Default intro

OK, the obligatory intro thread ...

New owner of a used PT here. The car is a 2002 Limited, with about 110K miles on it. Long story of how I ended up with it. Let's just say that I got it for $1 plus a couple of favors; that's close enough to the truth.

The prior owner is one of the most honest people I know, and she seems to have been pretty diligent in keeping the maintenance up. After getting a couple of minor problems fixed (replenishing the A/C, replacing the radiator thermostat), the car seems to be running well; over the first few tanks of gas, I'm consistently getting about 23 mpg.

Unfortunately, she's also not the most knowledgable person around about cars. She said the car has ABS (it doesn't), and that the timing belt had never been replaced (it had been replaced, a few thousand miles ago). So I'm poring through the old maintenace records, trying to figure out what needs to be done and when.

That's not to say that I'm the most knowledgable person about cars either. Sometime in the next few days I'll be doing my first oil change ever -- at the ripe old age of 53; pathetic, huh? Well, I've got the owner's manual; the service manual (downloaded from here); the book "Auto Repair For Dummies"; the Haynes book; and the Chilton book is in transit from Amazon to me ... between all those things I'm learning little by little.

Welcome to the forum

Sounds like you got a great deal on a PT, especially if the timing belt had been replaced as that work can be quite expensive

To find out more about your PT, you can go to this website and get the Build Sheet for it. It will show you everything that was put onto your PT:

In the left-hand column under YOUR VEHICLE click on Equipment Listing, on the next page that loads enter the VIN in the white box in the middle of the page then click on the red Search box.

When you get a chance please post some pics of your PT

Welcome to the forum from Western PA.
At 110k keep you eye on the temperature gauge
The Radiator cooling fan is not expensive or very hard to replace and I've had to replace the fan on my Cruisers around your miles.

Good luck and enjoy.

Welcome to the forum, 53 is not to old, I will be 71 next month and have done all the maint on my PT so far. Just take your time and do it right the first time. Once your into it replace all those little things that will give you trouble down the road so YOU know they have been done. Also clean everything that you are putting back together. That car will outlast us both!!

Welcome to the forum. I'm 61 years old, not a mechanic, but have been working on cars since I was 12 years old. My own cars and friends. Like I said, I'm NOT a mechanic.

Welcome to the forum from the great sovereign state of Arkansas!

I'm a licensed water well driller and certified IT security specialist. But wait, those are things I have credentials for but don't do.

For things I actually do, it should be noted that while I am an ASE Certified Master Automotive Tech and an excellent lover, I primarily work as a Safety Engineer among other things and I haven't worked as a professional mechanic since I was young strapping lad with long sexy flowing hair before college. And even then, I mainly worked on big trucks and heavy equipment. Nowadays, I enjoy working on these funny looking little cars for fun and relaxation. And I help others when I can.
