Default Newbe here

Hello everyone, I just registered on the forum, been doing a lot of thread reading . There is a wealth of information on here. I just bought a 2006 PT cruiser off a guy here in Tucson AZ. originally a California car. I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction for a fix. The PO said he was driving down the freeway at 65mph, something popped, and the car would not engage in any gear(5 speed manual). The shifter shifts into every gear just fine with the engine running or off, clutch pedal in or out, but there is no motion forward or reverse in any gear. The PT has 86,000 miles on it and starts and runs very well. At first I thought is it was a shifter cable or bad bushings, but they have checked out fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum.

This might be the problem.

Manual Transmission No Engagement.JPG

Another member Rob342 has a similar issue that you might have with your manual transmission. He did a great write up with his problem on his transmission.

i killed it.

This is all predicated on being completely sure the transmission is shifting into all gears and doesn't simply have a linkage problem which are common to the PT Cruiser.

If me (and if I was completely sure it's going into all gears) I'd first check the CV shaft because it's easy to check at home. If one of the shaft has pulled partially out of the differential, it will do just as you described. Though an automatic, this is exactly what me PT had wrong with it when I bought it.

If no joy and if the clutch and/or transmission work are beyond what I wanted to tackle, I'd then take the PT to a trusted tranny shop.

Beyond the, since it seems to be going into all gears okay, it sounds a lot like a bad clutch or internal to the transmission. So my second move might be to check to determine which one it may be. I'd remove the starter where I could see the flywheel teeth. And then with the tranny in gear, parking brake on and both wheels on the ground or on ramps, I'd turn the engine with a wrench on the crank bolt. I'd be sure I wasn't where the car could fall on me or run over me if it moves. While the engine turns, I'd watch (or have my sweetie watch) to see if the flywheel turns. If it does not turn, I'd know it's likely the clutch. If the flywheel does turn and if I'm sure the tranny is in gear, then I'd know it's likely internal to the transmission. Note that a shop would likely just pull the tranny to determine this since it would have to come out either way to affect a repair.

Again, this is all predicated on being completely sure the transmission is shifting into all gears and doesn't simply have a linkage problem. That's my third time to say this, so make sure.

Welcome to the forum from North of Tucson
After the fix, make sure you check/change your transmission oil. My tranny was dry when I bought my car.

SOOO BIG and I welcome you to the Forum from Ormond Beach, Fl.

I'd suggest following up on Handy's and ptcruisersteve's advise.

I've found no motion forward or reverse in any gear usually points to the clutch. Something, "the pop", might be keeping the clutch from engaging. Let us know what you find.

Happy PTin', ptprice
