Stripping down front brakes now, and found the previous owner had discovered a new pad material. Never mind sintered, how about solid steel

Update: Gatsby passed his MOT with flying colours today (advisories on the front indicator bulbs starting to lose their yellowing and the rear bushes on the front lower suspension arms starting to peel away at the edges) To get it through took a bit of expenditure on parts, but no too bad, at around 200 including brake pads and discs all round, front ABS rings (might not have been necessary), one ABS sensor, PCV valve and tubing. Add to that the purchase price of 170 and 400 for new wheels and we have a usable PT with lots of life left (55000 miles on the clock) and a nice spec (heated power leather seats, cruise control, etc.) for under 800.

The interior is very nice but to get it smart externally the peeling clear coat needs to be sorted, for which I have had a quote of 2000 from a trusted car painter. Anything less expensive is likely to be a bodge job as it needs taking back to the base coat all over, spraying with base colour then clear over..... However he did say that a colour change would not be all that much more, hmm....
