Default Bad wheel bearings

Hello out there. I just had to replace my two front wheel bearings on my 05 PT Cruiser. It only has 27K miles on it. I bought it used from Carmax in March with 17K on it. Isnt that early for wheel bearings to go out? Anybody else had this happen?

WELCOME to the forum.

Yes it is early. Sometimes the bearings last a lifetime. What probably happened is that Carmax took your car in from someone else as a trade. They inspected it, and tightened down the axle nuts above spec and put too much pressure on the bearings, burning them out. Just a guess, and you'll never be able to prove it. It could have been the previous owner also.

Thanks. Atleast I purchased their extended warranty, so it isn't out of pocket today.

Going on 68k miles and so far no problems with wheel bearings. I've heard some people say that over size wheels are sometimes to blame.
