Wife's 2003 GT Cruiser, 89,000 miles.

We just had the left front bearing replaced this weekend. The shop said that it looked like it had been bad for a long time and so the hub needed to be replaced as well. I saw it and yes, it did need replacing. They butchered the ball joint trying to remove the seized components so that also had to be replaced.

The shop guy asked if it had been making any front end growling or other noise. Wife drives with the radio turned up loud so she never would hear anything like that and I never drive the car, hence the reason for the hub replacement.

Anyway, left front bearing replaced at 89,000 miles. Right front was replaced about 15,000 miles ago.

I replaced mine about a month ago. I don't know if they were original or not since I bought the car with 95,000 on it. The car had 120k on it when I replaced both front bearings.

2001, just turned 100,000 2 weeks ago. NOT replaced yet, but fixing to replace ball joints due to rip in boot. Contemplating on doing this when I replace the Ball joint.

Might as well since you'll have it all apart anyway. ~$30 for each bearing and whatever it costs to have a shop press them in ($20/side here).

Our 2001 Pt w/107,000 got the car from a relative never had any wheel bearins replaced. Just a pescky noise from the rear when you hit a bump, I took the rear calipers off checked for bearing play (none) put antiseize on the bolts and lug studs and it went away for about three weeks now its back sounds like plastic on metal, its definitly coming from the rear wheels both side, maybe I should start a thread for this.

Sounds more like a bushing issue than a bearing issue. The FWD control arms are notorious for making that kind of noise when they die. Clunking over bumps..

Check the watts link and your rear trailing arms for bushing failure..

My personal thanks to veteran and novice crewbies that have offered information and how-to's they have been instrumental in taking LiquidPT from modded car to stock to live a more quiet and sedate life.

What cars beside newer Neons can we rob Knuckles from???

I want to pick up a set at the local yard and press out the bearings and blast the knuckles, paint em up and press in some new bearngs.

Sad part is they had this set up on the 84-89 cars and in 90+ went to bolt in bearings. If bearing went bad, you just pulled the wheel, axle nut, popped the ball joint at the stud, swung the strut/knuckle out and pulled the axle out of the hub/bearing and loosened 4 bolts and pulled the bearing hub out, popped the new one in. I think this set up must be a Neon easque cost reduction. Pressing in bearing is BS, Might save them a few bucks but I wonder how many they ate on warranty. I had both mine in my 03 GT replaced under extended warranty at 45K and car has 90K. Might get some spare knuckles, control arms and when I do the struts next year just do everything at once and have it aligned.
