Not being a mechanic guru, how would you know when you need wheel bearings replaced? Sorry if I'm kinda off topic... i have a 2003 with 120+K miles, maybe the previous owner had it replaced.

Do you need a bearing press for these wheel bearings?
To my understanding the 2001 does not have hubs, just single bearings. Easy without a press?

Thanks Natali and Loxsmith - I so hope that the previous owner had to deal with the wheel bearings. As far as I can tell, I don't hear anything.

I just bought a 2002 with 106K miles, and replaced both. I have owned a number of FWD chrysler products. It seemed like there were a whole lot of issues with 82-85 wheel bearings, and went away. We owned two neons that ran 168, and 190K miles without having to replace them. I am suprised by the responses here. They may be using China crap bearings, rather than SKF or some other reputable brand.
Fortunately, I built a wheel bearing puller for the old k-car stuff and works fine on the PT. I can do it myself without wrecking the alignment. You just have to disconnect the lower ball joint, pull out the axle. I can make a posting if someone is interested. Regards, XT_laser |
