I got WIDE WhiteWall tires with full moon hubcaps last year... Unfortunately, the brake dust trashed the whitewalls, so for a YEAR I was embarrassed and almost regretted them. Until, this month! A guy at work said they have something called Brake Dust Covers - from Kleen Wheels. I got a set of 4 for $70 and THEY WORK! WooHOO! Now, I'm stylin' again!
Turns out the website doesn''t even mention WhiteWalls, but to protect Alloy wheels which corrode from the brake dust, too. Just spreading the word. ![]() Got the whitewalls from DB Tires 888-922-1642 Got the 16" Full Moon Hubcaps from eBay

After I added the moon caps I went over a few potholes (in Michigan there are only two kinds of roads, ones with potholes and ones "under construction".) and promptly lost a cap.
I bought another from the local wheel shop I purchased the set from (at a big discount..one advantage of buying local) and had him check to see if there was a problem with my rims. Everything looked OK. A few weeks later I lost another (different wheel) and after returning to the shop (he offered to give me a refund) he gave me a tip. He remembered that "back in the day" guys would get chrome wheels and after a winter or two they would start rusting. They would then buy hubcaps to hide the rust. The problem was the chrome was too smooth and the caps would get tossed every time they hit a bump. The solution? a couple layers of 1.5" MASKING tape around the inside of the rim where the caps hook on. He said Duct tape would come off when it got wet but masking tape would just stick harder. I took his advise and haven't had a problem since.![]() I don't know if it the slight angle on the inside of the stock rims or if the finish is just too smooth, but if you have a problem losing hubcaps, it is worth a try.

I just bought a set of four chrome smoothie hubcaps for my '06 PT and I keep losing the left rear hubcap; fortunately I have honest helpful people along the bumpy part of my commuting route who keep returning the lost hubcap to the side of the road. I thought I had tried EVERYTHING and have also had my rims check out with no problem. Last attempt was 3/8 foam insulating tape inside the rim but I think that was too thick 'cause it didn't work either. I will try the masking tape.
I really don't want to buy a new wheel if I don't need to, especially if there's no guarantee it will work. But I am nearly ready to give up on my pretty shiny moons and switch to some other chrome design with a 1940's feel. Anybody have any more ideas? |
