Default Rim Size Question!

I am looking at a set of rims that I really like. The smallest size they come in is 20" x 8.5". I would love to do some 20" x 8.5" on the front and 20" x 10" on the back, but I am not sure if they will fit.

I'm pretty sure that around 18 or 19 is the biggest you should go on the front because of the clearance needed for turning. Let me look around for some info.

OK, here's some reading for you....

Will 21-inch wheels fit?

noob here: biggest wheel/tire combo?

18x9.5 265/35/80

How big can your rims Be on a 06 PT?

Thank you Crewzin. A member called DBROWN03 has 20's all around (found him in one of those threads) so I think I will see what width he has. I wish the rims came a bit smaller, I usually don't like 20's. I have 17's and 18's now.

I had my rear 20's off at the weekend (looking at park brake shoe replacement) and I noticed the set up at the back is just like a ford I used to have in the UK.

There is a spacer about 12 - 14mm thickthat spaces the stub shaft for the bearing from the mounting plate on the beam.
What I did was take this out and use washers TEMPORARILY to see how far my wheels would go inside the arch without fouling.
I removed the McPherson strut (even easier on the PT, just take the spring out) and slowly lowered the car down to find the perfect spacing.

I found that I could remove about 6mm of the spacer thickness to tuck them in nicely, but for extra clearance I machined the spacer to be 7mm thick at the bottom and 5mm thick at the top, adding a nice little rear camber that helped the clearnace and looked way cool!

I'm thinking of doing something similar with the PT so I can get it considerably lower...

Here's a pic of how low the front sat, unfortunately I can't find any of the rear, which was much lower

Is that a Ford Ka? That is an interesting thought about the spacing, though the camber must be a pain on the tires!

Correct! well spotted, didn't know if any of you guys would know what it was, way too small to ever make it to the US... mind you, these days anything is possible, the SMART is for sale in the US now!

It was just a ka... what you see on the rollers is the birth of the Ka turbo...

As for the camber, just like the PT, the rear end did little work other than a bit of gripping in the corners, the camber helped grip and the tyres wore out much quicker on the front than the back.

Thought I recognized that nose. I used to live in the UK and I still visit every year. Being front wheel drive, I am not surprised the front tyres (I am glad you spell it like that, I need to start again...) wore out faster. Happens to my PT too (heck all of them).

Hey Modrod,
Did you buy the air kit yet?
I'm realy interested to see how much room you have in those rear arches.

I'm considering it too and need to see (like I talked about above) how far the 20's will go inside.

Sadly the airbag git is a long way off for me! Its a big expense that I can't really cover right now. I have seen inside the black plastic fender lining and it looks like you can go quite a ways down if you modify that (if I am remembering correctly)
