I have a 2004 GT Turbo. It came with the original Chrome over alloys 17" wheels. Goodyear tires. I replaced the original tires at 20,0000. I replaced with Coopers, but did not know that they were summer tires, almost totally worthless in Ohio winters. At that time, I was told that the wheels were corroding under the rims and I might develop air leaks.
With the low profile tires, 205/50/17's I could not tell they were low until I started having problems. I replaced them at 45,000 with Goodyear F1 all seasons. It started out fine, but then they started to leak air again. I found this out when the tires developed cupping and made a howling noise. Front wheels seemed to be the worse. Rears did not seem to leak as much or often.
I drive this car for work, so I decided to change wheels and tires... I went to a 195/65/R15 General Altimax HP H rated and 15" alloy HPD wheels. The car now handles great, rides smoother and is immensely quieter. I simply did not need the high performance tires. I got the GT at year end and big discount.
The tire dealer said that, like Cruzin has said many times, the wheels can be ground to eliminate the corrosion and coated with a sealer and they would be fine. I do not know if you can grind the cupping off the tires or not.
I simply did not have the time to do the cleaning and sealing. They are in pretty good shape and appearance, but I am missing two center caps.
Is anyone interested in these wheels and tires? Located in Canton, OH. I am open to offers.
