Welcome to the Forum. How about giving us a little more to go on, how many miles, NA or Turbo, stop and go driving, did she buy it new or used? I have gotten 50K+ miles on PT's & other cars. I had a Cavalier that had 80K miles and I had the brakes checked twice and still had over 1/2 pad left.

Rotors will run between $50-$60 dollars a piece and pads about $35 on up. If she plans to keep it a while check out Auto Parts & Auto Accessories at AutoAnything - Truck Accessories, Aftermarket Parts, Tonneau Cover. You can get a pair of Baer rotors on there for $69 a pair.

Hooligan is right. If you mom has only about 40K on the car the rear brakes (drum or disk) should be good as gold. The front brakes do 80% of the braking. The rears should last 100,000 miles or more. If hers are shot, there's something wrong with the braking system or she's riding the brakes big time.

The braking system is probably the most important part of the car, don't be cheap with you mom life. If she's wearing them down that fast, go for the best you can afford.

No insult intended, this is not a time so save money.

That's about right.
You can usually replace the pads once and next time will need rotors as well.
TireRack also has a good selection of brake pads and rotors...
Throw a few more bucks and get ceramics and kiss the black dust goodbye!
