Unhappy humming sound

I have a humming sound coming from the front of my 2002 pt cruiser. I just replaced the lower control arms , the ball joints were very worn. The sound intensifies around 30mph to 40mph. I don't know if it is the transmission or the diff/transaxle. I was going to have the front aligned. I am not sure what it is but it has me worried.

Does the sound start at 30-40 or is that just where it's the worst?

I thought mine was the transmission too, but it turns out it's the wheel bearing. My humming starts at 10 mph or so and gets worse until about 60 and then it sorta quiets down a bit, but it may just be because of the road noise.

Maybe it doesn't know the words. Sorry about that but I couldn't resist. Seriously, it might just be the tires. You said you never heard this noise before? I know when it rains and the roads are wet I get some humming but it's the tires spreading the water.

I forgot to mention tires, I have one that hums and was told that the sound is a bad thing, if it happens all the time. I have to drive mine though until I get the $$ to get it fixed next Friday, but if I had the ability, I'd have it fixed or at least looked at ASAP.

Directional V and Z rated tires sometimes have what I would call a hum. My GT has V rated tires so again, more often in the rain, I notice a hum. Could be a wheel bearing but it was said you are going for an alignment. Fingers crossed, that could be it too. Good luck.
