Question 2002 PT Need Help - Replacing "Ball Joint Bushing"?

I was just told when I went to get an alignment that the "ball joint bushings" were shot and that they would not align the vehicle without repair. They quoted me over $300 - I have an eager set of grease monkies willing to help me out, but who've never done this kind of repair before.
I've read previous posts that suggest that it would be easier to replace the control arm chassi, new bushings, ball joints, control arms... The cost for these parts if we are able to do this without having to pay in-shop for the repair is a fraction. Do you guys have any suggestions?
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
