Default Questions about wheel width....

So, browsing this neck of the forum, I'm reminded that certain size tires have recommended wheel widths for mounting. For my 195/65/15s, most of the sites including tirerack show 4.5-7" recommended wheel width.
What effect does wheel width have on the car as far as traction, ride quality, etc.? Wider tires I know can have a lot of effect on the car as the contact area changes, but I'd never considered just the wheels.
