I run my stock tires in the winter. They do pretty
good in the snow.Next year I think I'll get a beater.
Can't stand to see Cruiser all dirty.Besides for my Cruiser
fix ,I'll just drive the wifes.[?]That way I'll only
have to clean one car.

Many aftermarket wheel manufacturers state in their literature that if you drive them in winter weather, it may void the warranty. This is usually on chrome plated wheels. It's due to the piytting effect, etc., of the salt, sand, and whatever, and not so much from the snow.

I do.
I have Dunlop winters and will be running Yokohamas for summer.
Previously I had Nokians and Dunlops
Before that I had PIrelli Winters and Goodyear summer tires

I'd love to put it away for the winter but can't justify the $'s.
Here's how you justify the $.

I have a $1,000 insurance deductible on the PT.
95% of all collisions I've ever been involved with happen in winter.
So.... if I buy a $1K or less "winter beater", and sell it in the spring for $800, I'm out $200 cost of ownership. But, my PT is still perfect and I have a low mileage, showroom condition new car.

The insurance for PT storage is $35 instead of $300. Basic insurance for the beater is $100. That saves $165 out-of-pocket cash that I apply to the $200 winter beater cost of ownership.

Now.... the difference is only $35 out-of-pocket to store the PT and drive a beater.

Hhmmmm..... can you buy and mount winter snow tires for $35?
I don't think so.

Think about it.....

I've been buying beaters for over 20 years for winter usage.
The collisions they've been in generally put more cash in my pocket than I paid for the car. If it's driveable, I pocket the insuance cash and keep driving it 'till spring. Then I get $35 per net ton as scrap metal from the salvage yard.

Other than driving an ugly car in ugly weather, there isn't a down side to this plan.
You don't want to try this in the Garden State. We have the highest insurance in the country and it's almost impossible to get a beater thru state inspection.

The salt has eaten thru the clearcoat on my wheels so as soon as the weather gets better I'm going to do the summer/winter swap also.
