Exclamation Severe Front End Vibration

I drove my GT home a week ago and it drove fine like it always has. Today I get in it to drive back(40 miles) and above 55mph, the front end and steering wheel would sometimes vibrate so bad I had to slow down to keep it in the road. Then all of a sudden it would stop and be smooth as silk for a few minutes, then start again. No noise whatsoever except for the sound of the tires wobbling on the road. What could cause vibration this severe? It isnt noticeable until at least 45mph, then gets dramatically worse from there. I have drove many cars with tires that had never been balanced, but this is 3 times worse than any of them! I even drove a truck once with the lug nuts so loose that when i stopped, i couldve took the wheel off by hand, and even that seemed smooth compared to this!
It seemed to get worse when I completely let off the throttle, but even if i gunned it, it still vibrated fiercely. Could the brakes cause this? The brakes have been vibrating badly when i hit them for over a month, but ONLY when i hit the brakes, not constantly! Anyone that can help me is greatly appreciated!!

I would check all of the bushings in the front suspension members. I had completely worn out bushings in my tie rods and control arms one time in another car that would make the steering wheel shake uncontrollably. PT's are known for having these bushings go bad.

My neon would do that. Sounds like your suspension in the front end is shot or going shot. Tie rods and bushings.

Also, check your transmission fluid! Usually when my inner and outter tie rods, the bearings, and all that mess would go.... the transmission was soon to follow. [[althought for your sake ill pray it isnt!

You may have already checked this, but I'd check the lug nuts as well.

If I can make it back home without it falling apart, I will try to look unerneath and see if anything is loose or looks worn. I might get the tires balanced just in case. I dont know if it matters or not, but the steering wheel has no play whatsoever. Even when it was shimmying so bad I could hear the tires vibrating, the steering was just as tight as ever with no free motion at all.
The thing that gets me is how quickly it happened. About 3 weeks ago, I drove it back and it had just a little vibration, like a tire slightly unbalanced, but it was hardly noticeable. Then I drove it 2 weeks straight and it was smooth as brand new the whole time, and now this time the wheel starts shaking so bad I cant even steady it with both hands!

I thought that showed up at slower speeds than 45? But anyway, I should check for a knot in one of the tires, right?

Jack car up on each 'corner' with vehicle's jack, it'll take you less than 5 min
a corner. Spin each tire and look for any imperfections- You'll see it's out of
round.
THEN grasp wheel and feel for any looseness, I'll link a how-to in next post.

This is something anyone can do, DON'T be intimidated.

From another post;

There shouldn't be any. The linky deal rear axle's center is unfamiliar to me,
it shouldn't be loose, though.

Perhaps someone can show you pictures of the exact parts.

Here's my best on quick notice:
-Extreme left, ~3/4 way up you have horizontal Lower Control Arm (LCA)
bushing (unlikely to be noticeable)
-90% right center there's the Ball Joint (possible, critical)
-Wrench is on sway bar end link (It'd make noise, not absolutely critical)

-Center left foreground Tie rod end (likely, critical)
-Extreme Right center Horizontal LCA bushing (always bad)
-Center right background, inner tie rod end, (possible, critical
And of course wheel bearing. Wheel will feel loose when lugs are tight,
and make lots of noise.
Same rear for wheel bearing.

Also check for bent parts, the inner tie rod (inboard the outer) will bend
in a collision w/ a curb.
A little help for the lady on the rear, gents?

In any case, by the time you finish jacking each corner, you'll be NASCAR
pit crew qualified!

couple of easy thing before spending a fortune
get the tyres balanced front and rear you may have just slung a weight

also i had a similar problem on a jeep and it turned out to be a bearing shim (0.3-0.7 shim that sits behind the wheel bearing to take up any play )
both these checks cost less than $10
