Default rack & pinion bad?

Any way to tell if the rack & pinion is bad on a 2002 auto trans PT. I just had Tires plus tell me that I need a new rack & pinion for $800.00 installed!

Racks leak.

You can get the inner tie rods separately, but not from the dealer.

Call them and ask them specifically why.

Yesterday I stopped by the new Firestone store here and had them align the front end. They put the car on the rack, but came and got me and side that I needed a new passenger side outer tie rod end. I then ask them if they had found any issue with the steering rack, and the tech stated the only thing is that it has a small leak at the low side connection to the rack, and that about every Chrysler has the same issue. So I will not be going back to Tires Plus to have work done on the PT.

I've got a lot of harsh wobble in the sterring wheel and I guy at my Tires Plus said it was bad tie rod ends. So I spent the $35 on tie rod ends, installed them myself and had them realign the car and i still get that wobble. Is it the inner tie rods? Or do I need a new Rack & Pin?

I'd guess it's tires?
Rear lower control arm bushings? Neon's did this BIG time.

You can easily check suspension yourself. Just jack up each corner.

Uptown, I'll have tomorrow off so I can do that, but do you think that everything I've posted here and on the popping on a left turn thread can be explained by that? this all started happening right aorund the same time.

Somethings wrong- Remember, there's LOTS in a steering/suspension system,
guys have had the rack come loose, the U-joint (Neon) in steering column
wear out (Omni), etc. Careful inspection is best.

Exclamation Re: rack & pinion bad?

Got the car jacked up yesterday and...

I found a bubble in the right front tire,
I found that there was A LOT of play in the right steering inner tie rod
I found a litle play in the left steering inner tie rod
I found That the ball joints are OK and dont move when I test them by jiggling the the grease nipple
But I did find the control arm bushing are worn and cracked

The big question now, Does the Rack & Pin need to be replaced?

Control rod bushings and tie rod ends are a couple of items that oft times need replacing on PT's. Lots of places don't do proper maintenance and greasing of the tie rod ends, and I think also that Chrysler scored a bunch of crappy tie rod ends as you can see them going out on cars with less than 30k miles on them.

Me, I regularly get under my PT to "tug on stuff". It's a good test to see if you bushings, pads, springs, etc, going bad. Tie rod ends, if you can shift your tire left to right while the wheels off the ground, and get more than 2" of play, you may have one going bad. Once they do, you should start seeing odd wear on your tire. Personally hate the damned things as they go bad too often.
