If you use them, keep your speed down. With all the recent snow ( down to 500 ft in Redding, CA last night) this topic is of interest again. If I want to go up to Tahoe I don't take the PT as I don't want to buy a set of smaller wheels/tires.
I went up to Timberline Lodge for the first time 3 days ago and my nephew did all the driving and putting on the chains. We borrowed a set of cable chains but it was too small for my tires so we ended up getting another set of cable chains for $48.00 at the base. Within 5 minutes after putting on the cable chains, one of them broke and got tangled within the wheel well, which caused us to think we lost it and had to turn back to the base. We took the other one off, so to not lose it and managed to make it back up to the lodge. It was when we tried to get some traction to park the car, did my nephew brought out the chain and discovered the broken one in the wheel well LOL

now that everyone's mentioning the 'low clearance' I wouldn't be surprised if that was the reason why one of the cable chain broke. I don't remember the sizing, but when my nephew put it on, it was a bit loose, but we used the rubber tensioners to hold it in place.

Question is, is there a way to repair the cable chain, or would I have to buy another set...?

I bucked up and bought some yokohama studless snow tires. what a difference. didnt want to use chains, or even attempt to. ive seen too many front wheel drives wrap a chain and tear off cv boots, brake lines, abs sensor wires, you name it. since i plan on buying smoothies in the next month, ill just put my all seasons back on the smoothies, and keep the snow tires on then stock steel rims. when winter comes a knocking, ill just do a quick swap int he driveway. sometimes you just gotta bite the bullet and spend a little money.

I understand your frustration of not wanting to buy winter tires but the spider kit is super easy to put on and is a good bargain.

Thanks everyone for the replies.

Wife and I bought some mid range Toyo's and had em siped but not studded.

"stay home" is what we will do when the snow zones are a mess.
