Default Got new tires, wanted to share.

Hey all... I (finally) got some new tires on this thing yesterday. The Yokohamas that were on it when I got it were waaaay overdue for replacement.

Made an appointment with the local Discount Tire to get a set of Khumos, but when I got there the manager pulled me into the back and showed me a set of Pirelli 205/55/17 runflats that he'd taken off of a brand new Mini Cooper S that morning as the owner had bought a set of 18" wheels.

So I ended up going with those instead... got what should have been a $520 set of tires for $280. A considerable savings.

Ride quality is way up, road noise is much diminished, and she corners a heck of a lot better.

Plus, with them being runflats I was able to ditch the spare and all the associated stuff, which pulls about 30lbs of weight out of the back.

you do know that run flats ONLY cover a small hole not a blow out??? or a big chunk of anything im not sure why everyone wants to get rid of the spare what did it do to any one

the MPG are not going to go up and if they do it will be so small it will not matter any way
and being stuck out on a cold dark night with no spare just dosent sound all that good to me
But that is just a old rednecks opinion if you like it then thats how it is since its your car
oh and them are some really nice tires and a killer price

I've got 24 hour roadside assistance with my insurance. If I have a blowout I'm calling them. Definitely not using one of those itty bitty spares to go anywhere.

As far as weight reduction... every 100lbs removed is a tenth in the quarter mile. These darn things are porkers as it is, every pound counts. My back seats are gonna be coming out as soon as the spring comes back around... absolutely no need to have them in there.

Hate to be a tire snob, but Kuhmo's had lots and lots of problems when on
semi's. I don't like the asian brands (except, possibly tolerate Bridgestone)

So not only did you save money, you got tires that are far, far better quality
than Kuhmo

Good for you!

We had run flats on our bmw, only thing that put me off getting them again was the cost so looks like you have done well there!

The ride on the bmw was a bit stiffer with the run flats but bmw stopped putting a spare in the trunk a few years ago. I ended up having to get one but it takes it lot of space. Run flats over here are very expensive compared to regular tyres.

I'll put in a 'plug' for the PT alumispare; they only came with the '01 (AFAIK)
and are a substantial weight savings over the steel spare.
It's so light it's almost fun swapping on the spare tire!

Anyhow, you might guess who has a few and is 'peddling' them, cheap.
