Question How do I remove the CV Axle?

We removed the CV axle from drivers side of 2004 PT and we can't get the inner joint housing pulled out of the transmission. Does anyone have any tricks up their sleeves (or tool boxes) on getting a hold of this smooth housing to give it a good yank?

May I ask, are you using a service manual to insure you're following the proper steps for pulling the axle?

I just use two small pry bars,(on each side of the axle) between the axle and the tranny. I just do one hard and quick pry and the axle comes right out.

We followed a couple of website how to's and also a friend (long distance) has been giving instructions. We have everything else disconnected, disassembled and ready to go, just wasn't able to get the housing popped out. I have a large pry bar, but I couldn't get it behind the housing.

Yes, even a stout screwdriver. Seems it's better to 'snap' or 'shock' movement, than pressure.

A few of my buddies were able to do it in 8 minutes; we took 20.

I used my ball joint pickle fork between the housing and transmission and give it a quick pull. Pops right out!

Thumbs up Re: How do I remove the CV Axle?

Thanks for all the help and suggestions. I never could get any type of prybar far enough behind the housing to get any kind of leverage, so I went to plan B. A homemade slide hammer did the trick in 1 pull. I used a vise grip to clamp an "L" shaped bracket to the wall of the housing. Then using a piece of threaded rod through a hole in the bracket, with a hunk of steel on the other end. One not so gentle slide and out she came.
