Default Different TPMS question - new tire/wheel set

Hi All,

Hope everyone is having a terrific holiday season.... don't forget your PT on the gift list!

Anyway, I've searched around and haven't seen anything about TPMS on a new set of tires/wheels. I have a 2010 PT and would like to keep the OEM tire/wheel set for winter, chains, etc... basically intact. I would like to buy a new set of summer tires/wheels with, of course, new TPMS sensors. So, can anyone advise:

*How does the vehicle "learn" the new sensors... I've heard that its as simple as driving 15 minutes over 20 mph (or something similar), to must have a shop program the new sensors to the vehicle... can anyone advise?

*RockAuto has several TPMS guages available for the PT; VDO, Doorman, etc., they are all significantly less than the shops. Does anyone have any experience with these units or brands? Any that are easier to program than others? They are all the style that the sensor is part of the air valve, however I understand there is another style that "straps" the sensor to the middle section of the ID of the wheel. Seems like that style would avoid many of the problems associated with the valves breaking... Anyone have experience with these?

Comments, thoughts or expereinces would be appreciated!

Happy New Year!

BDG

I have a Dorman right now on my 09 and it works just fine. Got it on Amazon for $22 including shipping. The system relearns on it own. No programming needed.

Also the only kind I know of where the valve is part of the sensor.
