Wow that really sucks.
Im not sure how to fix the rim damage, but the alignment should tell you if it off or not by the way it steers. If you turn one way and its smooth like a whip and the other side rough like sand paper then its not right.

What that means is if you feel a difference in the feel or the handling when you turn it may be off or have a bad tire. Most commonly drive straight and let go of the wheel if it turns one way or another, your gonna have to get it aligned. Make sure when doing this that your on a road that has less of a crown in it. You may even try a large parking lot that is flat.

Is it a chromed rim? Not much you can do there....
There's 2 parts to alignment - caster & camber. Caster is whether wheels are parallel, and will induce pull one way or the other. Camber is whether wheel in vertical to road or canted in or out. Only way I know of is to have alignment done - about $70 at Sears. I know of know way of just checking - they Do it correct it at same time.

With either caster or camber out, tire wear is more rapid or uneven.
