Default HELP! Front strut replacement problem

I'm in the middle of this job on my 2004 GT. I finally got the old strut assy out (it was tight) and now I am having trouble getting the new one in. This is supposed to be a 30 minute job - what am I missing?

The replacement is a Monroe Quick-Strut (171592). I uploaded a couple of pictures - one of them shows the two assemblies (old and new) laid next to each other. The second shows the new assembly in place with the top mount bolts most of the way in. It looks like the assembly is too tall by an inch or so, but it is the same as the one I just took out!

Frankly, I'm not sure I could get the old one back in again, either.

Any and all suggestions will be welcomed.

Sometimes you need to compress the strut & coil assembly to get it in, but usually you have to have the car up off the ground far enough to allow the hub to drop low enough. Installing them can always be a PITA!

Do you have both sides jacked up? The sway bar may be preventing the control arms from dropping down far enough.

Yeah I agree with comp cause I jacked up both sides evenly and that took the pressure off sway bar.

This was the problem - I only had one side jacked up. There is nothing specific about this in the service manual, but, of course, they do talk about putting the car on a lift, which raises everything at once.

In hindsight, it makes perfect sense. About 30 minutes after I wrote my original post, with no replies yet, I decided to try jacking up the other side as well. Once I did that, the knuckle dropped and it was also easier to move around.

It only took about 30 minutes to swap out the assembly on the second side. That doesn't include the time it took to remove the wheel, though. Some idiot had cranked the lug nuts on so tight I almost didn't get one of them off! This was true on the other wheels as well, but the front driver's side was the worst.

I was going to post earlier but barely got everything (and me) cleaned up in time to go out last night!
