Default Wheel well thumping...

Good day to all. I own a 2007 PT Cruiser that produces a thumping sound when I have the steering wheel turned, in motion. The sound is coming from my front left wheel well, or so it appears. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thank you...

Welcome. I'll just call you Mad for short.

Do a visual inspection to see if you can spot what the problem may be. With the car rolling, turn the steering to full lock and shut down the engine. Get your eyes and hands down at the wheel well and check for any contact. Then do the same with the steering turned the other way. If everything seems to clear and the plastic splash shields look tight, start checking the suspension parts. Grab the axles and see if you can rock them around, at the CV joints in particular. Do the same with the tie rods and steering rack ends. If you can't spot anything with the wheels on the ground, jack the front corner up and try again. Spin the wheel to see if you can make some noises. Also rock the tire and wheel side/side, top/bottom to see if the hub and bearing are tight. You may have to go the next step and remove the wheel. Because when the wheel turns, the strut turns there is a bearing at the top of the strut. That can sometimes fail and make noise. It's hard to see but you may be able to check it while turning or rocking the top of the strut. It's all a matter of elimination and testing each component.

While you have the wheel off, it's a good time to inspect the brakes, control arm bushings and torque struts. Those probably have nothing to do with your noise issue but they are wear items that need replacement from time to time.

Thanks for the advice. I am going to become more familiar with auto repair as time goes on.
