Default inner tie rod removal ?

Im getting ready to replace to replace the front struts on my 2001 pt and I my inner tie rods have some slack in them and plan to change them at the same time. I have never changed inner tie rods on a rack & pinion. can any one tell me how to remove them? and do I need any special tools?

I've not changed inners on a PT that I can recall.

If inner tie rods were accessible you could get them with a wrench-
I doubt there's room in the chassis.

There's a special tool- Like a giant socket- to remove inners while in chassis.

you WILL NEED THIS!

Private Brand Tools 70897 Steering Rack / Tie Rod End Wrench

I did mine in october. Until I bought this tool it was nearly impossible.

Unlike chevy/ford that have a nut shaped inner tie rod end, chryslers is 100% round. No wrench will fit it and no wrench will reach it. Buy this tool, it will save you hours of frustration :-D

To remove.

Jack car

Remove wheel.

Break center joint of tie rod free

Break outer end bolt free

Knock outer end out of knuckle.

Cut tie straps on boot.

Slide the boot off, use said tool to remove inner tie-rod end.

Reverse process :-D

I would recommend counting the threads on the tie rod, will save you loads of time re-aligning :-D

Hope this helps.

Its really a quick job on the PT. Hardest part is getting the alignment right again, I advise having a place like tirewarehouse do an alignment after you do the tierods.

I also advise doing the outers at the same time.

RockAuto Parts Catalog has some raybestos ones for like $8 a pop. I put those on my car and they work great :-)

this is the correct tool for removing and installing inner tie rods on a PT
Great deal on Lisle 46600 at ToolTopia.com
It works great, I have one. You slide it over the tie rod tighten the 3 allen screws to hold the tie rod and then put a 1/2" ratchet wrench in the and and unthread it. installation is the reverse.
I highly recommend Moog chassis parts. RockAuto usually has the best prices.

I just changed the inner and outer tie rods on my daughter's PT cruiser. I saw several postings here about the Lisle tool referenced below. The best price I could find on the Lisle remover was ~$40 and I'd have to wait for shipping.

I found a tool that nearly every local auto parts store carries which is designed for the purpose of removing round inner tie rods. The Cal-Van Tools 946 Low Profile Inner Tie Rod Tool is normaly ~$20, and I purchased mine at a local pep boys for $16 with a 20% off coupon. Advance Auto and a few others also had it in stock.

Anyhow, it's somewhat cumbersome to clamp it on the tie rod but really wasn't that difficult and it worked perfectly on mine. I highly recommend it!

There's also a good youtube video from the manufacturer which shows how it works:
