Default Handbrake issue

So my rear back right tyre blew out, I mean I have no idea why but man it was a mess like I have never seen before. So put the spare on and changed the tyre ASAP. However now it seems the handbrake doesn't work.

I can feel the tension on it, but the car still rolls, only way to get it to stop is either keeping my foot on the brake or putting it into park. (Automatic)

So what really do we think could be the issue, the handbrake itself, some plate issue? I have no idea what I am really talking about so just wanted your thoughts on it all.

I still cannot get over the mess of that tyre.

Turns out it was the brake shoes, and man, when he showed me they were wrecked. 90 quid it cost.

I take it back, so the rear brake pads were replaced as were the shoes but the handbrake is just not holding.

What is going on? Garage says I may need new cables but I am just not so sure, I know here they tend to just say everything needs to be replaced these days rather than fixing.

Handbrake was fine before I took it in for the brake pads and shoe. I have to pull it up so hard and far just to get it to hold.

What can I try to sort this? before I didn't need to pull it so hard to get it to hold.

Just a really stupid question, so please do not llaugh, I am still learning about my car, but, when learning to drive we were told when pulling the handbrake up not to have it clicking but hold the button down pull all the way up then release the button, so no clicking heard. However, I am reading the handrake is self adjusting or something and a few comment that you should pull it up whilst hearing the clicking.

As you can tell I am in no mans land on this, shall I try that clicking thing or am I really going to just bust my car doing it?

The shop messed it up, the shop should fix it...
Maybe this will help you do it yourself.

Just keeping it all in the same thread.

I have been looking at parking brake cables and they say for left rear and right rear. Any reason why?

I came across a make Blue print who sell the cables but do not list as for rear left or rear right so wary of buying them now.
