Default Brake Issues

A few weeks ago the red warning light for the braking system appeared on my control panel. I never did anything about it, and today every time I applied moderate to heavy pressure on the brakes I heard a subtle "whooshing" noise. After this happened a couple times the noise persisted for a while even after I took my foot of the brakes and began acceleration. As I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to mechanics, I was hoping you guys could offer some insight.

Welcome to the forum.

Needless to say, you should of had the brakes checked when the warning light first came on. One noise to you is different to somebody your trying to explaining to but very possibly it was the light saying your brake pads were getting dangerously low. They are probably scraping on the rotors now so do not hesitate to get someone that you can trust to look at them. Most chain stores will sell you everything in their inventory so see if you can get a reference to a trustworthy mechanic.

Did you check your brake fluid level to see if its low? If it is low that might trigger your brake light on but as Crewzin says you should get your brake pads checked. It can be dangerous if the brake pads are worn out and you have metal to metal contact with the brake rotor.

Thanks guys, I'm gonna check the fluid first thing tomorrow. I don't know the last time the pads were changed given that Ive only had the car for the last 13,000 miles, but it still has reasonable stopping power.
