Uh, yeah. Well, I plugged in the numbers from clevelandmike's original question and come up with a 1 mph difference; 75 mph for the stock combo, 74 mph for the new size. Remember, this is using the sizes mentioned by clevelandmike in his original question. Personally, I think the 220-50/16 is borderline and it wouldn't really matter whether you changed aspect ratio at that point or not. According to Tire Rack the aspect ratio should take place when cross sectional width hits 225. Now you're almost splitting hairs - 5mm difference. So what!? I'm sure Tire Rack has there reasons for selecting that particular dimension as the change point, but I seriously doubt even they would argue 5mm one way or the other. Still, when making recommendations you have to choose SOME point to make the change. To mix it up even more, what are the manufacturing tolerances of the tires in the first place? You know there has to be some, right?
If it were me, I'd go with the 50 aspect just to get a little stiffer sidewall for the small increase in handling response. |

I think the answer is that when I went from 155 to 175 it was a larger percent increase than 205 to 220. Also, an aspect ratio change from 55 to 50 is also slight. I think he's "safe" either sticking with same aspect ratio or dropping one range. Down to whether ride or handling are more important, but even that is only a slight change.
Sears is afraid of bogus lawsuits. Sad state of affairs... |

Not sure if this has been settled yet... But going from the stock tire size - 205-55-R16, to a 225-50-R16 wont change the speedometor at all. Your orriginal question was to go to a 220-50-R16, I dont even think thats an actual tire size, but I could be wrong. But you will be better off getting the 225-50-R16 either way if you want to get a wider tire. hope that helps, Matt
