Default Control arm bushings replacement cost and difficulty?

Just took my wife's 2003 PT Cruiser 4L (non-turbo) for an alignment. The shop I generally use (and usually trust) said they couldn't align it because the control arm bushings were gone. He told me the control arms also needed replacement, and that I was looking at $1100. That sounds like a crazy price, but can see it if there is a tremendous amount of labor involved.

My question is, is that way overpriced (we are a suburb of Dallas, Texas)? Also, how difficult is this to do myself?

it's easy IF you can get the big vertical bolt loose. you can drill a small hole in the floor to spray it with oil from the inside and let it soak about a week before you attempt it.

i was told by a good certified mechanic i trust that a decent impact gun is preferred because if you stick a breaker bar on there you are more likely to spin the nut that is welded to the inside of the frame.

it's a couple hundred bucks for the arms. there's posts here all over about it.

one was easy, but i had to torch one of mine off so i could heat the bolt directly. mine: control arm fun. WEE!
only with heat could an impact turn it. with a breaker bar i could have applied more force, but then you risk ending up with the nut spinning in the frame and you have to cut the floor open to fix it.

Its a PIA but doable at home with some ramps/jacks. I used a Swench wrench to get the big vertical bolts out but unless you have one I can see it being extremely difficult.

As far as $1100 is concerned it seems fair? I'm not very good at prices but it is a time consuming process plus an alignment when you're done. Shop around for the best price but make sure you see what people have said about the shops before getting work done on your car.
