Default broken sub frame

Hello I am new to this forum and would like to know if anyone else has run into this. MY 2001 PT started pulling to the left right after hitting a small bump in the road. I thought a tie rod was about ready to fall off because I could hear the tire scrubbing on the road. After pulling into a parking lot I did a quick inspection and did not see anything so I drove on home (just a few blocks away) . Then checked online and found that the lower control arm bushings are known for wearing out and sure enough they are. so off to the parts store and back to start the repair . But noooooo ! After removing the plastic panel on the right side to access the front bolts and mount I found the real problem , the sub frame is rusted through ! Now I am waiting for the dealer to get one in so I can replace it (of course it is on back order). Note it only has 42000 miles , no need to say I think this is a factory defect .

Thanks for any input !

it's been reported here, although VERY rarely. to me something rusting apart after 15 years isn't really a defect though. usually when i find rust on my car i wire brush it and spray something over it.

similar thread: My 02 PT Cruiser literally fell apart with only 48,000. miles on it
similar but happier: Undercarriage rust

i would cut out the rot and weld in new metal as for me that would be easiest/cheapest...or get one from a boneyard as it will likely be 25x cheaper than the dealer. i would guess they'd want like $50 tops for it. a little time with a wire brush and a can of undercoating and it'd be perfect.

it does seem odd to me they say it's on backorder. i'd assume it would be out of production.

I'd try to find one in the southern or Western drier climates. I use Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market to see the inventory of yards.

or find a PT hit in the rear and get the front sub-frame from it.

Dealer--- Friend has a late model Jeep that need a warranted transmission and was told to keep driving it and they will have on in a month. Must be the new Fiat way.

The under carrage should be wash out from time to time in salty climites. But you may look for a used one. May need to look south of you if your in the northern states.

Thanks all for your in put ! however for a frame to rot through is a defect! It can not be welded don't think you can weld to rust . Yes rust is common in my area (do to the road salt ) . Ford had the same problem with their mini vans and replaced the front sub frames and the rear axel because the road salt ate them up . All under warranty by the way !!!! I think they knew they got some sub par steel and owned up to it . Perhaps Chrysler should do the same . They have recall troubles already so I wont hold my breath . I am going to replace the frame with a new one for the safety issue , this is my wife's car . It has never been in a wreck and was bought new . For this to happen at such low mileage shows a problem, even if it is 14 years old.

Does these car sit in a garage? Cars that sit will rust out quicker just siting around. Especially on a gravel or dirt driveway. But if you clean the undercarage off once in a while this can be ovoided. A used one is safe if you inspect it before buying. I have seen many 01 and up without any issues. You should see the truck frames I see rusted out of all makes. Either spray under it at the manual car wash or use one that have spray jets under the car if automatic wash. Salt left for 14 years is going to rust things.
